Church isn't the guy they are going to ask to play single high. The FS will.

We won't be playing much single high. That's what we did under Rob Ryan with his man schemes, this is a totally different defense.

2 Deep is also much tougher on a safety than single high, especially when there are multiple vertical threats. If you can play 2 deep than single high is cake.

5 or 6 FS's on Vacarro's level? Id love to see that list. Cyprien, Thomas, and Swearinger are the only guys I see that are on the same level. And Swearinger may be the only 1 we have a shot at in the 2nd round.

5 or 6 and you just named 3 of the top of your head.....lol........I will say this, not a fan of Thomas at all. I wouldn't draft him in the top 4 rounds. He looks like a horrible run defender, lacking speed and bad angles. PASS

Doesnt create turn overs and not an elite athlete. Everybody else I wanted DL or OL would have to be gone before I picked him.

No, I named the only 3 guys I feel like have a chance to start right away at FS for us besides Vacarro.

What I like about Vaccaro is that every time toughness and aggressiveness is mentioned everyone always says he's a really, really tough guy unlike most of the guys coming out of UT these days.

I know he is talented, and I know he can cover after spending so much time in the slot... but it is very encouraging to hear that he's a tough guy, a hard hitter, and likes to play the game.

He isn't my first choice at #18, but if we end up with him, I would be perfectly fine with it. He's a really quick-twitch, talented guy, who has the right mental make-up, has an aggressive defensive mentality, is known for his toughness, and is at one of the Cowboys biggest areas of need.

It would be foolish to not be happy with that choice.

I'd rather have Warmack, Cooper, Richardson, Floyd, or Lotulelei... but if they're gone and the team decides to take Vaccaro, then I think it is a good decision

that's a bit harsh. Polamalu had 6 career ints in college (0-2-3-1 in that order) and there are likely many examples of decent safties that had similar stats but became better at it in the pros.

show that is the norm and not the exception. Go ahead. Guess what you will find?

Brandon Meriweather and Kenny Phillips, both had 7 career ints, not a huge amount of turnovers either, but both good players.

Only point I'm trying to make is, depending on how you're used, you have less chances at ints.

I don't think it is harsh at all. Does this team really need another player that can't force turnovers? The defense is full of those types now. Sure , he could improve, but hebcould also remain at his current level. Is it worth the gamble?

I think Jefferson is as good as anyone in this draft class. He will be a starter in the nfl for a long time.

Hes got average written all over him .
I dont know what games some of you watch but i watch plenty college football and Vacarro screams BUST .
He makes zero plays , good not great tackler , good not great in coverage , no athletic freak by any means , so what is he great at ?

I will be highly upset selecting him in either round 1 or 2 .
If you have a 1st round selection you cant draft purely by need when we have so many .
BPA !!!
If austin is there you have to take him .
I wouldnt waste a 1st round pick on ANY of these safeties coming out .

Kiffin said in one of his interviews "we don't just play cover-2, there will be plenty of single-high and man coverage".

It's well documented that Kiffin defenses don't play cover-2 only.

I've also read that in the Tampa-2 coverage that one safety sometimes has a larger zone than the other safety (i.e it's not split exactly evenly down the middle of the field).

I like Matt Elam better, he's like Bob Sanders

Not a fan of Vaccaro at all.

They don't split their zone down the middle of the field, they play a stretched outside 3rd look. The Mike becomes your deep middle safety.

I didn't intend to imply that the Safeties had 1/2 of the field each. That would be cover-2, not the Tampa-2; although, in theory, the Safety zones do converge behind the MLB on very deep coverage.

My contention is that the Safety zones may not be divided exactly equally.

Teams play their safeties, ideally, as if either can cover equally. If you designate one with more coverage responsibilities then another, the offense will take advantage of that. They will dictate scheme to take advantage of the fact the defense is tipping their hand. Watch USC football. You will see that this is not really what Kiffin is doing. I think some of you might be surprised.

We honestly may not have to worry about Vaccaro being there at 18. There are Rumors that the Steelers want to take him and that Baltimore might consider moving up to take him.
