Ihave 3 issues with Church.

1. He ran his mouth before the Lions game and got torched on the first play putting us in a hole.

2. He ran his mouth about how he knew not only his position but everyone else's and that yielded 0 interceptions.

3. His best asset which is tackling was average last year.

Maybe you're not being critical but, just sound a bit critical... That's okay on a sounding board like this. I'm okay with your commentary.
I just think if they felt Nelson was that much better than Church, they would have already let him go and signed Nelson on the spot like
lots of teams did during the 1st week of FA. I think posters have to be realistic in that these teams are professionals and are doing a job
and being paid well to do it. It's just fine to have a contrary opinion but, their actions should tell you a lot about how they feel.

Let's dissect this.

1) I think they probably know Nelson is better than Church but they won't pay Nelson a penny more than they are willing for that safety spot. And FWIW, if Nelson is really holding out for a 4 year deal averaging around $8-9MM a year, I applaud the Cowboys for not even picking up the phone. That's way too much for Nelson.

2) I understand these people are paid to make decisions like this but then again, the flip side to this is that the Cowboys have pretty much been a non-factor in the upper echelons of the NFL for almost two decades. So it's not like there is a strong track record of sound roster building and team success to support the claim these guys actually know what they are doing. If anything, the fact this team hasn't sniffed a SB in 20 years should probably make a fan a bit more critical of the competency of the people making decisions, but that's just me.

3) I am actually looking at their actions. They inquired about Weddle. That tells me they know they can upgrade the safety position. They also sniffed around some other safeties, which again tells me they probably know they can do better at safety than what they have. Same with CB where they looked at nearly a half dozen guys. That tells me they know Carr probably isn't good enough (or worth what he's making). The fact they aren't signing any of these guys doesn't tell me they think they are OK at SS or CB. The fact they inquired about all these guys but didn't sign them tells me that they know they need to improve but think they can do it for cheaper than what's been out there and gone with other teams.

PS - Just so you think I am just bashing for the sake of bashing the front office............ I think they did very nice jobs by adding Thornton and Morris and I did like the signing of the kid from Oakland, if only for depth at DE. IMO, they could and should have done a bit more in free agency to the point where they wouldn't have to rely on just the draft and hopefully some lucky cuts in June to fill what are still a lot of holes on this team.

You make a lot of good points and I can agree (personally) with most of what you say. I think Stephen said before FA that he doesn't really
like it because good players get paid like "all pros" and average players get paid like good players. I think they are operating much like
New England now and they are not going to overpay for any player even if they don't sign anyone. They are filling a few holes with contracts
they like and I do think they are going to continue this approach leading up to the draft where they hope to get their future.

Obviously it isn't right. And nowhere did I suggest that the Cowboys should pay him what he's apparently trying to grab.

But I get that you have to defend just about every move the Cowboys make even if a poster isn't actually criticizing the Cowboys.

Nelson is a better S than Church. That's just reality. You could cut Church and save nearly $5MM in cap space. If Nelson's demands drop while he floats out there without a team, I'd certainly have no problems sending Church packing and using his cap space to get Nelson signed to a decent deal.

I believe that was likely their plan with Weddle had he signed on. All reports show that Nelson's demands are a top market deal.

Let's hope the fact no one seems interested in even talking to him will soften him up.

I don't see anybody paying Nelson 4 years at 8/9 million per. He's 32 going into his 10th season. I think the Cowboys are just waiting until expectations meet the market. Then they will get serious with him, assuming they are interested in signing him.

Yea 2 years is enough. He's not going to get 4 years

He's not getting $8/9M per either. Especially in Big D.

Someone else is going to fork over the money to get his services for another three seasons. It's just not going to be the Cowboys. The team needs one more solid strong safety coming up in the ranks...and that probably is the route least traveled, and most effective for their game plan.

To me Wilcox is the weak link, not church. most times it is church making the tackle after others miss the guy.
I think Marinelli has a say in who they get and who stays also, and he may like church.
Or he may not like nelson that much.
