What is the deal with him? When are we going to see some production out of him? He's been groomed for what, nearly 2 years now. Maybe I'm being shallow, but I'd love to see him start making strides. Preferably on the field @ the WR position.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Maybe he can do something on special teams this year.

yep remember the first year, he had to have leg splints on his legs, then the next 2 years he had shoulder injuries,

this is a make it or break year for stanback

He's just an athlete and not a player. It takes more than running fast to make it in this league. He was bad experiment.

Same thing was said about Miles Austin this time last year. Now he's apparently TO's replacement.

Be patient, people.

Austin had shown FAR more than Stanback at this point in their careers. Have you seen the guy run routes? Its embarrassing.

I believe that shoulder injury came on the very first contact of his very first return of that season or close to it.

Bang. He was out.

Actually, no, he didn't in my opinion. He looked just as bad. He looked awkward as all hell just trying to even catch the ball -- terrible hands, terrible body control -- and what's worse was he'd actually been playing the position for most of his life. I'm still kind of leery of the sudden turnaround. I had just about given up on him. Stanback actually looks to have better hands and better body control while catching. That's that part I think is either "you have it or you don't" (with Miles being the exception). The route-running can be taught.

From Stanback? Nothing except one or two preseason receptions. Two decent kickoff returns. A fumble. A lot of excuses.

Austin had at least shown the ability to run routes by his third year. That alone is FAR more IMO.

He did have stone hands. You're right...but he was still better than Stanback is at this point. Not that I'm buying the idolization of Austin now, either.

Stanback is a wasted experiment at this point IMO. Move on after camp if he hasn't made GREAT strides.

I certainly haven't seen any of Stanback's "have it" qualities? Have you? Or have you just read about them from training camp reports?

He's had one off-season. This is his second off-season as a WR, period. To say it's a waste or anything is waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too early. Hell, it might even be justified to give him another year after this one.

I'll throw up. Give me a real WR. Please. No more QB conversions. The odds aren't in your favor. Teams supposedly vying for a Super Bowl shouldn't be keeping experimental WR/QB's on the roster for three years with absolutely NO benefit. Give me an experimental pass rusher or CB. Give me a Conner Barwin...not a Pat white. (I'm aware of the different draft status).

...and please, for anyone that feels the need to throw the inevitable names around...don't bother. Been there, done that.

Just my opinion. Hate it.

I'm not worried that much about the 5th or 6th WR position. That spot *IS FOR* projects. I'd rather cut loose guys that we know aren't any good and aren't getting any better like Hurd.

Please Jerry, no more WR conversions! Unless it's a 7th rounder like Crayton.

IMHO Stanback just ain't too fluid a runner, which is what you have to be to be a receiver. He's a balls-out runner with momentum, kind of a long strider, a la Barber. How can he disguise his cuts, make cuts with speed, when he's just barrelling down the field like a sprinter? He doesn't have the quickness needed by WRs to stop-and-start and lose his man, I don't think.

Stanback's a smart guy, a good guy from what I've seen. Hope he proves me wrong.

Reply to my own post ..

Stanback's to WRs what Tyson Thompson was to RBs. Fast in the open field, but not really nifty. Good on returns, but maybe not good enough lateral movement to really get things done. More of a straight-liner.

Chalk it up to a Bill Parcell/Jeff Ireland reach. ... In Ciskowski we trust, who ain't going to make the same reaches that Ireland did ... (did Ireland try to talk BP out of Carpenter, hm , I wonder ...)
