When should we know who the left guard will be in 2017

First week of training camp?

Do you think the coaches already know who it will be?

Three guys according to the media are all equal at this point in time. One who cannot stay healthy, Chaz Green, one who has washed out at some of the best NFL clubs this decade(other than Cleveland), Jonathan Cooper, and a journeyman one game starter last year, Emmett Cleary.

I am coming to the conclusion the left side of the line is going to have some issues when push comes to shove even with Tyron Smith anchoring the left tackle position, the opposing defenses will attack LG relentlessly. I hold fast that we should of dumped Ron Leary and honestly I thought LG would of already been decided. This will separate the men from the boys if we have a revolving door at LG. It seriously looks like our weak link this year will be worse than our achilles heel last year at RT with Doug Free.

All hands on deck for this first Giants game Sept 10th.

Honestly, I don't think it will matter who lines up between The Beard and Mr. Smith. As for the position being a "weak link," that is expected considering whoever it is, he is not going to be on the same level as the two All-Pros.

I fully expect for Cooper to have every opportunity to win the left guard spot and I'll be greatly disappointed if he somehow fails to do so.

From the way I see it, and how Linehan mentioned it in a recent interview, agree and Cleary were playing there in minicamps in an effort to increase the line's flexibility. Linehan stated that once camp started, players would be playing at their expect positions.

I think that Green and Cleary are tackles first and foremost, and I wouldn't want anyone to trust Green as a starter to stay healthy. He has to prove it before I believe it.

And for the record, I'm not ruling out Byron Bell as option B for the left guard spot. Word is that he played well there for the Titans two years ago.

Once they have a few padded practices, they will probably give it to Cooper by default because I am certain Green will have a debilitating hangnail by that point.

That's my thought as well. I've seen more statements by observers favoring Jonathan Cooper more than anyone else to win the LG spot, once push comes to shove. The longer they wait should keep the competition going with intensity.

At some point reasonably early in TC might be the point in time when the staff leans more to one prospect over the others, imho. Just a wild guess, on my part, though. Injuries could easily play a prominent role in the staff picking the winner, of course.

If Green stays healthy, I think it could take until the fourth preseason game to decide the competition between him and Cooper. I really don't expect Cleary to be in the running.

It is almost impossible to fairly judge o-linemen without pads. I am confident that the coaches have a plan once camp starts. I would suspect that who ever starts the 3rd pre-season game will be the guy on opening day.

Don't forget Joe Looney who has started 13 games in the past at guard, 3 of them for us last year and the rest for San Francisco and Tennessee. Only Cooper has more experience of the bunch.

Well, I've got a presentation to City Council next Wednesday, so Tuesday by mid-afternoon works for me.

So true.

The defensive line has almost all of the advantages without pads.

It's not even worth talking about linemen and how they look until the pads come on.

Yep, this nails it. Green is a bust washout that cant be counted on and he will be the swing tackle. Hopefully he wont injury his hang nail riding the pine. Cooper should win the guard position unless he totally bombs.

I hope so. I would definitely prefer seeing him there than outside at tackle. I consider him Plan B if Cooper can't win the job.

If Cooper can't win the job, he likely doesn't make the team. Similarly, if Green can't stay healthy, he's probably done here too.

That said, I'd love to see Cooper live up to his draft position
