First week of training camp?

Do you think the coaches already know who it will be?

Three guys according to the media are all equal at this point in time. One who cannot stay healthy, Chaz Green, one who has washed out at some of the best NFL clubs this decade(other than Cleveland), Jonathan Cooper, and a journeyman one game starter last year, Emmett Cleary.

I am coming to the conclusion the left side of the line is going to have some issues when push comes to shove even with Tyron Smith anchoring the left tackle position, the opposing defenses will attack LG relentlessly. I hold fast that we should of dumped Ron Leary and honestly I thought LG would of already been decided. This will separate the men from the boys if we have a revolving door at LG. It seriously looks like our weak link this year will be worse than our achilles heel last year at RT with Doug Free.

All hands on deck for this first Giants game Sept 10th.

I think someone will be penciled in as starter heading into camp but expect to see a battle for the position. Outside of Tyron, Frederick and Martin I don't think anyone is etched in stone.

I think as Fans just watching and reading everything we can, we (mostly) have no clue at this point. My hope is that the coaches do however, and that training camp will confirm what they think right now. If, as we all have heard, that Collins has grabbed the starting RT position by the throat. That leaves either the journeyman guard/tackle in Bell, The reclamation project in Cooper, The tackle who hasn't been able to stay healthy in Green, and a couple of no-name backups in Cleary and Looney. (No offense to them).
I wanted Collins to stay at LG, but if he is far and away the best player for that position - I'm all for it. I want to see his nasty side come out. And he is a massive man, with quick agile feet, maybe this is his chance to become the 4th horseman ! (With Smith, Frederick and Martin).
Without inside knowledge on any of the players, My hope would be that Cooper can grab the LG spot, possible - yes, probable - we will see.
I want Green to make it, I would love for him to get thru camp/This Season injury free. To me, he is best suited for the swing tackle position. He can play both sides and backup both studs. (so long as Collins develops as I think he will) His run blocking will be a thing of beauty, his pass protection is what he will need to work hard at. Bell can back up both guard and tackle and would be a great backup plan in case of injury. With the young guys fighting for any scraps left over. So many really interesting battles came training camp.
Each year has been interesting to watch, but this year could be an all-time great, what with the O-line, Secondary and the D-line battles for spots. Plus the Jaylon Smith watch, and receiver's ! Who will claims the last few spots.
The final cutdown to 53 could be brutal this year - gonna be so much fun, and imagine the debates we are all going to have !!!
Good times are here again ...

Let's get the pads on first

Which will have to wait for 2 or 3 practices. I think by CBA rules, they can't have padded practices for at least the 1st 2 maybe 3 practices..
I think we may see the first glimpse in the 2nd PS game, as the HOF game they may just throw some experimentation out there. You know, the usual versatility BS they do to screw up players from being good at one position.

Jonathan Cooper favorite to win LG job with Cowboys

...The Cowboys drafted left tackle Tyron Smith with the ninth overall choice in 2011, center Travis Frederick 31st in 2013 and right guard Zack Martin 16th in 2014. Right tackle La’El Collins was projected as a first-round choice in 2015 but went undrafted for reasons out of his control. Jonathan Cooper, who could win the starting left guard job, was the seventh overall pick of the Cardinals in 2013.

Despite concerns about Doug Free’s retirement and Ron Leary’s departure in free agency, the Cowboys could start four first-round draft picks and a projected first-round pick on their offensive line this season...

3rd preseason (dress rehearsal) game... barring injuries, whoever trots out with the other 4.

With smith on one side and Beard on the other sub par guard play can be masked to a degree. In the NFL you only need two good to great interior guys Fredrick and Martin allow flexibility to cover for a JAG at guard. Worst case Fred helps the left a little more than usual.

If Cooper can't win the job, he likely doesn't make the team. Similarly, if Green can't stay healthy, he's probably done here too.

That said, I'd love to see Cooper live up to his draft position
If cooper can't win a job he is gone if chaz can't stay healthy he better hope he can land on IR or PUP, that is only way he makes the team.

2nd week in TC, maybe 3rd.

If La'al is at RT the 1st and 2nd week, then he is unlikely to move back to LG.

If La'el stays at RT then LG is going to be the one that performs best in the preseason. That might not be decided until the end of training camp.

At that point it's most likely Cooper or Green.

It's still possible that they move La'el back to LG. Then it's Green/Bell/Cleary competing at RT.

If Green is a starter it won't be decided until the last minute because he has to prove he can stay healthy all preseason.

and yet just in Marinelli's scheme..the 3tech is placed on the outside shoulder of the guard with other guys positioned to to limit help on the 3 tech. Teams like the Giants will probe for weakness's there for sure, as well as L. Collins game awareness, which seemed to be a weakness of his.........

yes because every team has pro bowl players at every position. Leary received a lot of help in pass blocking. Of course teams are going to look for the weakness but Dallas will also scheme to mitigate the weakness. People like Zack, Travis, and Tyron win 90+% of their battles the rest of the guys you would want them to win 75-80% with or without help.

So you see a 75-80% guy competing for the LG position at this time? Where did you have Leary rated? 80%?

I would put Leary at about 80% he got a bit of help on quick guys that lined up over one of his shoulders. I expect who ever wins will be close to winning 75% of their assignments.

If Cooper is our LG, we will have taken a major hit at that position. Hard to believe we don't have ONE OT who can play RT besides Collins. He should be playing LG, & Cleary and Green should compete for the RT spot. It just shows what a luxury Leary was last year, and how weak our depth is right now. Let's wait until the pads come on to make any decisions, but I've seen Cooper with the Browns, & he couldn't even break into one of the worst O-lines in the NFL.

I see a talent level similar to Kyle Kosier being our left guard. Maybe some of you will remember him. Always injured but played through the injury. He was also around in Tyron Smith's rookie season.
