When was the last time Jerry got a quality linebacker?

I mean after seeing this bunch I can say we’ve had far better LVE and Jaylin had about a year or 2 where they looked really good and it was the best linebacker room we’ve had in a long time. Didn’t last long.

McClain had a solid small run.

People don’t remember him now but Devonta Holloman..I remember thinking wow he looks good and then he had to retire prematurely.

Bruce Carter

Micah I think would’ve been a great one in a different scheme he just was so good of a pass rusher we couldn’t play him at linebacker.

Overshown may have a higher ceiling then all.

We could draft Anthony Hill Jr from Texas to play MLB but even with a late 1st round pick it might be a reach.
Anthony should be a very solid player. I don't think he will be a superstar though.

Micah can play any of the 3 linebacker roles at an elite level full time. At edge? He can't. He is smaller, great in certain obvious passing situations. Gets beat up. Not great stopping the run. But at linebacker he can stop the run because he can read, react, run down hill to the ball. I've watched his Penn State tape. That's how he was used. That's why we drafted him, to play linebacker. We been woeful drafting backers since.

That's fair, but still, aside from him, we haven't exactly done well drafting linebackers

The D really lacks that smart instinctive MLB with range and sure tackling. Don't get me wrong Overshown is a good player and the most exciting thing about the LB room but I also don't think he's a MLB, he's more of that weakside style LB. Logan Wilson and Kenneth Murray aren't MLBs either and probably fit better on the strong side. Finding an MLB should be a huge priority in the offseason
Styles is certainly an intriguing prospect. Only thing I wonder about with him is his run defense. But he's still new to the position and seems to have a high ceiling.

LB is not a valued position. You find those guys in the middle and later rounds unless they're really good prospects. There have only been 2 true LBs drafted in the 1st round in the last 3 drafts combined, and they were late 1st rounders at that. The guys who are great athletes at the position usually get turned into edges. And one of those 2 guys drafted in the 1st, Jihad Campbell, may eventually wind up an edge, too. If you draft someone like Sonny Styles with a 1st, he'd better be a beast if you expect him to make an impact.

You don't reach for a position just because you need one. LB is a position you save cap $ and picks. Unfortunately, McClay's drafts have been so bad that last 4 or 5 years, we can't even get the middle rounds where you find your LBs right.

Smart $$ would be spend our cap and high picks on Edges, OTs, and CBs, and find someone like Kendricks to play LB. Just don't trade or sign a complete jag like Kenneth Murray who has shown the whole world for years that he can't play.
Maybe they should stop wasting 4th round picks on failures like Lance and Mingo. That's two mid-round picks that could have been used on linebacker and/or safety.

I realize with the horrendous play of Kenneth Murray, Jack Sanbon and even Logan Wilson many will view this as a critical need in the off-season. And I agree it is a need. But with just those 2 first round picks and no day 2 picks, the Cowboys will really have to be smart with this draft.

I think the two biggest needs heading into the draft are OT and Edge. For one thing, Fowler, Clowney, and Sam Williams are all free agents. They need bodies and you don't find quality edge rushers in the 5th and 6th rounds. At OT, they have to get a more dependable option than Steele. Steele is an excellent run blocker but he loses too many battles with edge rushers. Should the Cowboys keep Pickens, they won't be able to exploit their greatest assets on offense because Dak is constantly getting hit as he throws. This offense cannot function until they get an offensive line that can give Dak more than 2.2 seconds to throw the ball.

On the other side of the line, the Cowboys defense has only 29 sacks this year. Against the Vikings, who gave up 47 sacks prior to the Dallas game, they had no sacks and very little outside pressure on McCarthy. James Houston, a 5th rotation guy leads the team with 5.5 sacks. That's awful. The Cowboys are 23rd in the league in sacking the QB. It i hard to believe after 14 games that are 9 teams worse than Dallas. This results in the worst pass defense in the league. They are 32nd in yards allowed passing per game which is why QBs like Russell Wilson and JJ McCarthy lit them up.

IMO, OT and Edge are the two priorities in the off-season. After that come LB, S, CB, RB. TE may be a need as well if Schoonmaker leaves via free agency.

Exactly. Terrible at it.

Exactly, and that's a huge reason we're struggling on defence. Houston, Philly, Denver, Detroit, Chicago, New England, Buffalo, Green Bay, Seattle, and LA are all contenders because they have great defences. The reason they're contenders is because they have a good front 7 including good trenches and good linebackers. If you can do that, the rest falls into place because the secondary can do more.

Honestly, id like for us to double at LB. I know after round 1 our next pick would be in round 4, but we should be drafting Styles and the best LB available in round 4, as well as Downs. I'd also tag Pickens and bring back Williams on a 1 year deal. I think the offense is good enough. I think we need as much help as possible. So, Styles and another LB would make our defence so much better, especially if we also get Downs.

I think we are going to either need to trade down from one of the first round picks or we need to be active in FA. This is not an offseason where we can afford to go draft alone.

I would do back flips if we could get both Styles and Downs. My concern is that we will finish with a couple of meaningless wins pushing us down in the draft from getting at least one of them.

Yeah, if we can get both, our defence would be lethal.
