When was the switch from favorite to cellar?

When did Roy go from an absolute fan favorite, to a large percent of fans hating him??? Not too long ago he was a beast, but he's not the same Roy.

I for one am still a fan of Roy, although his quality of play definitely needs to improve. That being said, he is still better than the majority of safeties in this league, but every time he gets beat in coverage, it gets magnified by us. However the way he is treated by the media and alot of us fans is ridiculous. Yeah, he has thin skin and is a little bit of a baby, but the way the media and us are treating him definitely aren't going to make things any better.

Thoughts?

I started not liking him after the Skins game when Santana Moss went off.

Several prominent members of the media declared him public enemy number and those not smart enough to think for themselves toed the line.

You'd have to ask those mediots why they chose to attack Williams, one is a member here, because it really doesn't make a lot of sense. There was the note allegedly left by Williams but there was some bad blood on the mediots side well before that.

Roy has always been getting beat because all players do. Back in the day though (as in the 1st month of this season and prior) he was making just as many plays, if not more then he was giving up so people didn't bash on him.

Recently he hasn't been making many plays and as a result, hes the worst player alive.

My annoyances with Roy have been developing over a few years. The guy really seems to be living off of past hype, and despite coming into the season lighter than ever, shows no desire to be the type of player we all KNOW he can be.

Another thing which absolutely pisses me off is how quick he is to pass the buck. He gives up a pass completion and gets in Reeves face about it. He makes a stupid horsecollar tackle and acts pissed off that the ref had the nerve to call him on it.

Never thought of that, but good point. I know Hate was a big contributor to that. Her "Roy Willy" comments were always negative about him, and everyone seemed to follow since the times when they bash him for coverage he has said that they dont know what is going on out there.

Well guess what, they're the media, not coaches. They DONT know whats going on out there. Maybe all this has been started because some dumb journalists have a personal agenda against him because he wasnt all friendly and openly accepting criticism?? (Although it has got to the point with Roy where he needs to be alot better at taking it)

I think little ball(s) had a crush on the singer from Destiny's Child that Williams was dating. She really went overboard with hate about that time.

It's easy to see not being good in deep coverage. It's not easy to see being good in underneath coverage or being good against the run and getting through traffic to make the tackle, except in the case of big hits.

Once the big hits disappeared (which was a good thing), the average joe fan couldn't see his strengths and could only see his weaknesses.

You have to wonder why he can no longer make the big hit except for on very rare occassions now. Part of it is that he was always in the right position before. He was much more confident and always around the ball causing turnovers and making the big stops. Now his confidence is shot to hell. It's almost as if he has forgotten the fundamentals of the game, such as tackling. There's no way that Darren Woodson was covering his butt THAT much. Something is wrong with Roy Williams and the entire Dallas Cowboys organization is suffering because of it.

Remember how fans used to keep track of how many players Williams put out of games early in his career?

And you're right, people tend to see big hits and such yet miss things like the tremendous coverage job he did on the flea-flicker in the Eagles game.

How many people would have seen it if the pass would have been completed?

I'm not upset with RW because of his problems in pass coverage. I'm upset with him cause he's doesn't seem to be making the tackles like he did in the past and I'm not talking about those "big hits" he made which the highlight reels capture. I'm talking about plain and simple tackles that any other defensive player would be expected to make.

The last really good game I saw RW play was against the Eagles in Dallas maybe 2 years ago & the Cowboys were leading. Fox was broadcasting the game (I think) and they showed 4 tackles he made against the Eagles which ended up with either no gain, loss of yardage or limited advancement for the Eatles. Fox said that if RW played like that the rest of the season the Cowboys would really go places. On one play RW came up to the LOS, took on the Eagle and stopped him cold. He did the same on 3 others. No horsecollar type of play was involved & the tackle by itself wasn't a highlight reel play but the 4 plays combined was very impressive and clearly showed why RW was such a force and a great SS.

What has happened to that RW? Yes, I know he still makes a lot of tackles but too often he just doesn't get to the other player to bring him down. Has RW lost any of the speed he might have had or has it lost his taste for the game for a variety of reasons which could also include the criticism he's getting. Could his play have something to do with the change from the 4-3 to the 3-4? I can't imagine why it would but you never know.

Basically, the media is like this gigantic propaganda machine. You piss a recognized member of the media off, then he tells his pal, who tells his pal. Next thing you know, the focus is on Roy "sucking in coverage". When Roy misses a play, or does a horse collar, it's magnified ten times, and so this subtle brainwashing starts taking shape within people's minds. So, the next time you see it happen, even though it probably happens all over the league, by multiple players and multiple teams, you immediately associate Roy Williams with this indoctrinated notion.

It's pretty much just a Pavlovian response.

The tide started to turn this year somewhere around the N.E. game. It's soooooooooooo hard continuing to apologize and make excuses for the guy. Can't make a play on a ball.. out of position for the Kyle Brady TD, cannot cover a simple route on Jeremy Shockey.... Should have been PI in the Detroit game... Pathetic vs. Cooley... the inexcusable hoarse collar vs. McNabb was probably the last straw for me. I have one Cowboys jersey. A RW authentic.. it's to the point where I refuse to wear it this Saturday at the game. Can't represent the guy.

I agree to a point. The Brady TD for him was bad, as was the bad position on their first TD to Moss I think it was. If he would have stayed inside and taken away Moss instead of biting outside on Watson, it may have been broken up.

But covering Shockey? Not many safeties out there can. That's what I'm talking about. We magnifty his every mistake. Not alot of safeties can cover Jeremy Shockey. He is an elite TE. We need to stop glaring at things Roy cant do (that not too many safeties do) and thinking he's terrible. He's an average coverage safety. But he's usually great in run support, and when he plays great defense coming downhill.

I disagree about the PI in Detroit. Contact, but nothing major. Made a good play on the ball for once (If I remember correctly)

Cooley is another TE/H back that is talented that create mismatches. You're complaining about things that every team has trouble covering.

I just want alot of fans to stop the hating and realize that he cant be a perfect player. Accept the things he doesnt do well, but realize the things he DOES do well. Maybe then we might realize he's not as bad as many are portraying him out to be.

The guy can't win. He gives up a 15 yard out and people want him drawn and quartered. He covers his man well and prevents the TD and it "should have been PI".

That was great coverage and it wasn't PI.

Oh, and if you aren't going to wear that jersey, and it's size 48 I'll take it off your hands. I'd hate to see it go to waste.
