Where are they now? Analyzing five years of 'top' free agent signings

http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2016/03/nfl_free_agency_2016_what_happ.html

Analysis: Ndamukong Suh was the crown jewel of free agency, and the Dolphins paid the price to get him. But did it really help the team? Not yet. The Dolphins fired coach Joe Philbin and finished 6-10, missing the playoffs.

There are other cautionary tales even just after one year. The Eagles were considered to be the "winners" of the offseason, acquiring the NFL's leading rusher, DeMarco Murray, and heavily sought after cornerback Byron Maxwell.

Murray was considered a huge disappointment and possibly one of the biggest busts in recent memory. He clashed with coach Chip Kelly and had only 702 rushing yards. Maxwell did not live up to his massive contract.

The Eagles couldn't get it together in 2015 and coach Chip Kelly, who had personally brought in both players, was fired. The Eagles wasted no time dumping both players off in trades this offseason.

Greg Hardy was also a major miss, signing an incentive-laden contract but bringing with him a public relations nightmare and locker room headache. He won't be back in Dallas this year.

The good? Darrelle Revis, still productive in his second stint with the Jets and Mike Iupati, a solid addition to the Cardinals offensive line.

Considering the money handed out, this class has been mostly underwhelming so far...

PHI has shown how easy it is to get out of bad deals the last few years.

There is nothing to be afraid of, you just have to pick good players just like the draft.

Go to the referenced site, and the reading is a ton easier...I usually go back and edit...but this job is just too extensive. But the information does show there is a tendency for successes over the period of time. Depending upon, usually, the age of the signed free agent.

Great work Cc. Shows we are doing it right like the Pats. Seems like guys in football have less of a chance going elsewhere and replicating their past success more so than other sports. Wonder why:huh:

Their past success is a combination of coaching/scheme/surrounding talent/ individual talent.
When you sign one of these guys, you are bringing in 1/4 of the 'package'. Unless you are confident that the other 3/4 is in place... Disappointment is very likely.

They get paid in other sports too. Seems really bad in football. The psychologist in me wonders if in such an emotional game surroundings/environment and being comfortable have something to do with it. Dunno. Just a theory

The team around free agents affect players less in other sports. Barry Sanders proved that you can be one of the best of all time and still only carry a team so far. 40 year old Jordan can still sink 20 a night with the right amount of NBA minutes. Also you can get situations like Murray last year where I believe everyone apart from chip would agree he was misused.

I didn't realize the Commanders cut Hatcher. I wonder if he still has some left in the tank?

Appreciate the effort someone takes their time to allow you to read this, as you probably would look at it on your own, and stop whining.
Have a great day!!!!

Who was whining?

The line for the burn barrell is on the next corner...and if you don't like what is posted, simple, move on!

Or you could simply have gone to the referenced site and read what is easier for YOU to consume.

I appreciate the post but why not make it easier for people to read if you are going to take the time to post it??

Also, I don't speak nonsense.

The Cowboys currently have $901,076 in dead money against the cap. That puts them in the top ten teams with the least amount of dead money. It is after all dead money that can put a beating on teams and Dallas has done an excellent job at reducing that amount significantly. It was only a year ago when the Cowboys had $18,900,840 in dead money. It's absolutely sickening to think the Cowboys paid Miles Austin $5.1 million last season for nothing. The frivolous deals of the past come back to haunt you ten-fold and the regime under Stephen Jones has put an end to it...

So, when we start looking at all these new names out on the free market, it's important to understand that waiting can bear the best fruit. Those that spend the most, regret the most. As I pointed out the other day, it's a lot of money for nothing. In the last 10 years, the six teams that have spent the most money have been the Dolphins, Jaguars, Eagles, Commanders, Buccanneers, and the Browns. The best record to have come out of that bunch has been Philadelphia with .547. While Dallas isn't done yet, building through the draft, retaining your investments, and adding a few key pieces here and there remain the winning formula in the NFL. Smart teams know this to be true and thankfully the Cowboys have made that turn.
