In the 1970 season the Cowboys were 10-4, became the first team to win the NFC East Division, and then advanced to Super Bowl V against the Baltimore Colts.

In the 2nd quarter Johnny Unitas threw a pass that hit WR Eddie Hinton in the hands and bounced off his hands to TE John Mackey who took it 75 yards for a Baltimore touchdown. In 1970 in the NFL an Offensive player could not be the first player to touch the ball after it has hit another Offensive player. The referees ruled that Dallas CB Mel Renfro had touched the ball in between the first tip and Mackey's catch. To this day Renfro maintains he did not touch the ball.

Dallas had 10 penalties for 133 yards and turned the ball over to the Colts 4 times. One of those turnovers is highly disputed. In the 3rd Quarter RB Duane Thomas fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Cowboys Center Dave Manders. The Colts all started jumping around motioning that they had the ball. The refs awarded them the ball even though Manders came out of the pile with the football.

After Jim O'Brien kicked a 32 yard FG to win the game 16-13 a very angry Bob Lilly threw his helmet 60 yards. There was no doubt that "Mr. Cowboy" was pissed.

In 1971 Bob Lilly played like a man possesed and when the Dallas Cowboys returned to the Super Bowl he made sure that Bob Griese was not going to have a good day. On one play Lilly hounded Griese at every turn and sacked him for a 29 yard loss. The Cowboys Doomsday Defense played inspired, angry football and held the vaunted Dolphins Offense to a meager 3 points, the lowest ever allowed in a Super Bowl and allowed only 185 of Offense total.

In 2008 I want to know who is going to step up and be pissed off like Bob Lilly? Who will be the player to step forward and demand all of the players around him be as driven as he is. Where are you Bob Lilly?

Maybe, as ironic as it sounds, TO?

Great POST !!!

Ken Hamlin and Bradie James are the only ones on defense who even come close to that kind of personality.

We definitely need a leader on defense. One who is out spoken and passionate. Ware is young, but as young as our defense is, he is as good a candidate as any. I hope he can shift some focus to leadership, without distracting from his game performance.

Your right, Bradie James does have the right persona for the job. :)

Hos you never cease to amaze me with how we are on the same track. I just finished listening to the "Inches" speech by Al Pacino from "Any Given Sunday". By the time I was done listening to it I was ready to go out and play! My wife thought I was going to run through a wall. I had the same thought afterwards though, who will be the guy(s) to step up and inspire this team to play with heart?

Back in 1971 we had a lot of leaders on this team: Lilly, Jordan, Staubach, etc. and that year they played like they were not going to allow another defeat to end the season. Five years in a row we had lost in the playoffs but this year was going to be different, we weren't going to go out that way again. The guys were going to win or be carried off the field.

That's what we need now, someone who will step up and inspire this team with that same attitude.

Watch this speech by Pacino and tell me you aren't inspired to go out and give it everything you have: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rFx6OFooCs

We really need someone with the leadership and nads to step up and not allow this team to fall apart down the stretch again.

this defense lacks violence. Well, for the most part anyway. Exceptions include Hamlin, Roy (when he gets a chance) but few others. Today, there is a lack of an edge on the defensive side. Not saying we need trash-talkers, but some outward drive would help. A Barber for the D-side if you will.

Ware needs to dominate a game like that... I believe Demarcus needs to develop more pass rush moves, he gets pushed outside too often.

Wow - I'd say he was a little angry.

In this era of free agency, guaranteed contracts, product endorsements and celebrity status players, do you honestly think that players care about something as insignificant as the game?
*sarcasm off*

I was trying to find the video of it on the Net. I can't believe it's not out there somewhere.

Remember after Super Bowl VI when he lit up that big ole stogey? You knew then that he had fulfilled a lot of effort.

Unfortunately it takes a combination of that personality AND superior talent to fill that role. And in the second area, neither of those players are even close, barring a huge leap forward.

The only people I could see managing that are Ware and Romo.
