The Cowboys will open up their 2017 season with the reigning Coach of the Year roaming the sidelines. Despite this, there are a lot of folks that just aren’t convinced yet as Jason Garrett only has one playoff win in seven seasons as the leading man. Still, Garrett has been improving as the head coach. After three consecutive 8-8 seasons, Garrett’s Cowboys rose to 12-4 in 2014. That was in part due to an MVP-caliber performance by Tony Romo. In 2015, everything went south after Romo’s clavicle injury in week two and the Cowboys dropped to 4-12.

However, under the same circumstances of Romo going down early, the Cowboys rode two rookie sensations in quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott to 13-3 in 2016. Garrett was instrumental in helping the rookie Prescott usher in a new era of the Dallas Cowboys. With the help of his lieutenants, Scott Linehan and quarterback’s coach Wade Wilson, they have built one of the deadliest offenses in the NFL.

Although Garrett has been building towards a consistent winner, Cowboys fans don’t let him off the hook that easy. With five Super Bowl wins since 1960 but zero in the last 22 years, Garrett will have to take full advantage of the team he’s constructing now to change some minds. So, where should Garrett rank as a head coach in this league today? Of course, he doesn’t have the skins on the wall like Bill Belichick but he also hasn’t been a head coach for 22 years.

And the reasoning of this entire article is based on team success and tenure.

What would this article have looked like two years ago when we went 4-12?

Garrett has a limited role here. Its boiled down to team chemistry, playing hard, team preparation, and clock management. He fails time and time again at the two most later roles when it counts most.

Quite frankly if the Cowboys hadnt gotten lucky on Romo for 8 years and now Dak, this clown couldnt coach himself out of a paper bag. Garrett is far and away one of the bottom half coaches in the NFL. In his 10 years as our OC and HC he has never proven me wrong. Garrett has no business coaching in the NFL. Unless you give him what any of 100 coaches could have success with...............one of the most talented rosters in the NFL.

Garrett is the equivalent of a RB behind the Cowboys Oline. Any of 30 top RBs could rush for 1400 yards given 300 carries.

Garrett is the RB equivalent of Darren McChicken.

There's Belichick and 31 other guys.

NFL head coaches are a dime a dozen except for in New England.

And even he depends on Brady.

In the middle, where's he's been his entire life.

:hammer:
Some successful head coaches work through the ranks and become successful at the NFL level with their own guys (around them). They build it around their own proven system and if it works for the most part, they get to keep coaching.
Although JG had a built in job as NFL OC, I do not believe he ever "earned" any kind of notable successes on his own as a leader. JG never had to work through the ranks to establish himself or build it with his own guys. That's not his fault but I think that has hurt him especially with a meddling owner. Of course, JG might not be at the caliber he is without all the help Jerry has given him. Until JG coaches in a few championship games or beyond, I think he'll always carry the stigma as a "born with a silver spoon" guy.

And the players seem to like him and respect him. Honestly it's the game day coaching and clock management I have the most trouble with.

Also, it sure would be nice to see the team NOT come out flat after a week off.
I do think he's on the rise though. Maybe this will be the year it all comes together.

"It's a process".

The offense is playoff quality already, the next step would be acquiring the necessary difference makers on defense that will put the team in contention. Some people want to see dazzling feats of clever coaching, but their hands are tied until that defense is squared away. Once this team is balanced we'll see if Garrett has what it takes to put them over the top,,, as it stands now I'd say he's clearly building a stable program that should be competitive for years to come.
