where our biggest problems lie

just look at the positions which for some reason we refuse to draft high in.

We're not getting development out of our wide receivers regardless of what we do in free agency... last time we drafted a wr in the first day was 2nd or 3rd round draft pick antonio bryant... and he has had about 3000 yards in his last 3 years... I guess I'm guilty here too, wanting Jerry to throw money at the WR problem, but he has completely ignored it in the draft.

offensive line... when was the last time we drafted a linemen on the first day? james marten in the 3rd?

why do we keep drafting the same positions, and we keep getting them wrong...

defensive ends/linebackers in the last 5 years... - 6 on the first day... still haven't got it right other than demarcus ware... Our front 7 still sucks compared to what it should be.

Then even though we have Jason witten, we've spent two 2nd round draft picks on tight ends... we're not good enough to have that luxury...

if we were going to draft spencer, we should have traded bobby carpenter... made no sense to keep him. It would have been like keeping fasano and getting bennett.

Then we sign Marion Barber to a kings ransom, then spend a first on felix jones (who is clearly the better running back), but we're still stuck with Barber. And I say stuck (while he is one of my favorite players), he isn't a franchise running back, but is getting paid like it.

On offense we've spent more on tight ends than we have on offensive line, or wide receivers respectively... hell maybe even more than running back. We still haven't drafted a backup quarterback, which is far more important than a 2nd tight end.

What are we doing with offensive linemen?
James Marten, Doug Free, Pat McQuistan, Rob Pettiti, Jacob Rogers, Stephen Peterman... Are we serious?

Not only have we not drafted offensive linemen seriously, but we should have let Flozell go a long time ago. Gurode, Davis, and Colombo i'm fine with, but we could have done better on that left side.

Horrible draft picks
- Felix Jones. Not because he isn't a great player, he clearly is. But they paid Marion like a fulltime running back, and refused to even give Felix the rock.

- Martellus Bennett. Anthony Fasano, Jason Witten... nuff said.

- Tashard Choice. I would say that was a great pick up for a 4th, but after you've already given so much to the RB position, you definitely could have used this pick for something else.

- James Marten. Either horrible coaching or horrible drafting pick one.

- Isaiah Stanback. Surprised? 4th round picks are still high picks imo. Why get this project receiver...

- Bobby Carpenter. Parcells picked him because of his dad i guess. This guy would be great in the 4-3, too bad we run a 3-4...

- Anthony Fasano. Jason Witten nuff said. You draft a backup tight end before a backup qb? Get out of here...

- Skyler Green. We just got cute with this guy. We didn't pick him up as a receiver in the 4th, we picked him up as a returner... and that just doesn't make sense.

- Julius Jones. Stephen Jackson... nuff said. Not even hindsight... we all wanted him.

8-9 players who should have never been on this team.

I want to note Jacob Rogers/Stephen Peterman - Not a single linemen we drafted has worked out since before 2002... why is that? Same with Wide Reciever.

I want to say Spencer, but I honestly think he had to be picked up, we could have got that other pass rusher the year before but we got carpenter...

Well what olineman or WR should we have picked when they were a good value at the time? Other than when we selected Bobby I don't think there has been a lot of those opportunities.

we're always quick to talk about best player available, or not reaching in the draft.

Sometimes you gotta get that need player. Many offensive linemen have been drafted in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds who have become players in the nfl in the last 5 years.... same with receivers...

sometimes you can trade down, sometimes you can trade up, and sometimes you just need to get the player where you are.

We should have got steven jackson... right there saves us from making many mistakes... and i might go as far as to say we might still have bill parcells if we got steven jackson...

players after bobby carpenter...

Santonio Holmes, Laurence Maroney, Tamba Hali, Antonio Cromartie, Manny Lawson*, Nick Mangold, Joseph Addai, Mathias Kiwanuka

after anthony fasano
Devin Heseter, Maurice Drew, Chris Gocong, Max Jean-Gilles, Ko Simpson

07 was a weak draft class, but we definitely could have done better.

This thread is dumb..it's basically all hindsight. Everyteam wishes they could have drafted someone else.

Overall I think Jerry has done a good job drafting talent over the last 3 years.

lol someone always wants to call it hindsight...

its not hindsight...

passing on steven jackson was a *** moment. julius jones?
anthony fasano was a *** moment. 2nd round tight end with witten?
bobby carpenter was a *** moment. manny lawson was out there...
felix jones wasnt as much a ***, but why pay barber, then draft a rb in the 1st... thats a ***... no hindsight about it. same goes for choice...

stanback is a ***, how many project wide receivers are we gonna have...

they drafted a kick returner in the 4th...

A lot to address in the OP, but Spencer and Carp play different positions, being "stuck" with MBIII is good thing, Felix isn't "clearly" better than MBIII by a long shot, calling Felix and Bennett "horrible" draft picks is clearly wrong since both will be impact players and Choice looks very solid, and Peterman just signed a new deal worth $15 mil - not bad for someone who didn't work out.

If you have Tom Brady, and you draft Peyton Manning, and you can only play two of them, and you have to pay both of them... thats not a good draft pick. Its not just about the player, its about the need, and how that player fits on your team.

how would you have Tom Brady then draft Peyton when Peyton is the older of the two...?

why did we draft Greg Ellis over Randy Moss?

We could have drafted Lynn Swayn in the '74 draft yet we didn't

We could have picked up Joe Montana in the 79 draft yet we picked up Robert Shaw Aaron Mitchell and Doug Cosbie...WHAT WERE WE THINKING?!?!?
