Where was Demarcus Lawrence all night?

OK - so let me prefix this by saying that Coughlin & staff came up with a brilliant strategy for the pass game last night. The passing plays were designed for 3-5 step drops and quick releases. While we did not give up any big plays on defense, it was still a very sound strategy by the Giants and Eli executed the game plan almost flawlessly (except for the clock management aspect).

With all that said, where the hell was Demarcus Lawrence all night?

The Giants were fielding a revamped O-line with a rookie left tackle. Even when they moved Demarcus to the right side to line up against Flowers (after Gregory left), I didn't see any pressures, pocket-collapsing, tackles for loss, etc.

I know that Eli was getting the ball out lightning quick, but I don't think Demarcus Lawrence made a single impact play on defense last night.

Now, I'm not going to over-react and say that we overpaid in the draft for this guy, he can't play, etc.

I do think he'll bounce back.

But with all the hype about how he revamped his body, looked un-blockable in camp, and was poised to break out in a big way, I guess I was a little disappointed not to hear his name at all last night.

Now, more than ever, we need this kid to step up! Let's go, Demarcus!

He was certainly underwhelming. When it comes right down to it, we now have the same pass rush we had a year ago, except we don't have Selvie or Spencer. We are also without Scandrick but have Lee. We are going to have to scratch and claw for the next month at least till we get Hardy, McClain and hopefully Dez and Gregory back.

Why the praise on the Giants strategy? I am sure Giant fans are not doing the same. They did not score a legitimate touchdown all game and their biggest weapon was held to the worst game of his career while Eli had a miserable stat line as well.

As for Demarcus, I almost made this post a couple times. I was disappointed after hearing all of the praise during the offseason. I am sure he will have better games but I don't think the announces said his name once (when the television was not muted to avoid hearing Collinsworth).

The same place the rest of the defense was....back in Oxnard.

Wasn't a great start for Lawrence.

For most of the game he went up against Marshall Newhouse at RT who is not a very good player and Lawrence was unable to get anything going pass rush wise against him.

They must have been way more worries about the RT than the LT cause they had a RB chipping on about half the plays I've watched of Lawrence so far.

This is where I question if people actually watched the game.

Manning had a quick release last night. It was 3-5 step drop and pass. Unless you thought every play would break down the line immediately, I'm not sure what you expected our D-Line to do.

I wouldn't call it a genius game plan by the Giants. If it wasn't for turnovers the Giants offense was putrid. The Cowboys were more than happy to give up those dink and dunk plays all night and I hope the Giants do the same game plan the next time we play them. Gregory showed he was special yesterday. Lawarence isn't special he is an average (or possibly above avg) player. Eli did not sit in the pocket long enough for him to make an impact. Which I am fine with because that's exactly what the Cowboys defense wanted. they allowed those dink and dunk plays and it worked out great for the Boys on defense.

Because their game plan almost beat a much stronger team (in my opinion) on the road. The Cowboys had the largest spread going into week 1, and the Giants came to within 1 point of beating us. They're game plan was spot on, and save some knuckle-headed decision-making in the last 2 minutes of the game, that strategy would have prevailed.

Now, I will grant you that a big contributing factor to the success of their strategy was that we kept shooting ourselves in the foot all night.

Still in all, the reason why I brought up the strategy in the first place was because it was designed to neutralize the pass rush (and did so pretty effectively).

If we look at the glass-half-full however, I am HEARTENED by the fact that the Giants felt compelled to abandon the big play all night in favor of the quick-release, dink-and-dunk stuff. They did this because they were afraid of our pass rush.

When was the last time a team had to design a game plan to avoid our pass rush?

The glass-half-empty side of this coin, however, is that our (potentially) strongest pass rusher is out for a to-be-announced timeframe (I'm waiting for the MRI before we begin sighing a collective breath of relief).

I hope they prove me wrong, but I don't see that fear of our pass rush influencing opposing game plans until after the bye week (which is all the more reason why we really need Demarcus to step up his game over the next few weeks).

The defense played really well.
If you have a complaint about them...you know nothing about football, or didn't watch.

My complaint is one, they never stopped the run and never stopped the underneath pass. Our linebacking game left a lot to be desired in my opinion. No passes we're contested. RB continually got to the second level in our defense. I expect better tackling also.

We'll see what the coaches have to say this week.

I don't disagree with this. Lee looked rusty and a step slow. He missed tackles he usually makes. I am 100% chalking it up to basically being out for the past 20-21 weeks of his career.

I'm confident he will shake off the rust and improve quickly.
