Where's the Orton blame?

The truth is that if Romo had thrown that INT there would be denizens of Romo supporters blaming Miles Austin. When that would not work, then they would go back to blaming Garrett and the defense. Finally it would end with 'Kyle Orton isn't going to do any better' and 'you're going to be sorry when Romo is gone.'

If anything, this game showed me that Romo is over-valued by the organization. He's better than Orton for sure, but he's not so much better that it justifies that much more money that he gets paid versus what Orton gets paid. I think for years we just saw that Romo was worlds better than Brad Johnson, Jon Kitna and Drew Bledsoe. That fooled the organization into thinking that we needed to make this past contract extension.

BOOM! thanks for making my point and not realizing you did. This is why Romo does not deserve all the hate he gets. I am amazed on how much hatred an undrafted QB can get. This game last night proved without a shadow of a doubt the issue is squarely on Jerry for making this mess in the first place. How anyone can expect a guy who was the QB coach for the dolphins for only TWO years to any better than he has is beyond me.

Just when I go ahead and agree with you on something you posted earlier you go and post this nonsense. I look at it a bit different. The D showed up today which they rarely did for Romo all year. Why is that? The team and coaches get too comfortable knowing Romo is going to put up points and they get soft and conservative. If anything, yesterday proved to me how important Romo is to this team.

While I don't want Kyle as a starter, I would like to see what he could do if he had a couple weeks of work in the offense with receivers and timing. I have no doubt we be in the play-offs today if that were the case. His ability to get the ball out quick into tight windows, throw over on coming rushers and overall accuracy give him quite a advantage over Tony.

And just to add. All the people putting games on Romo for checking out of run plays needs to see that we threw 46 times in a tight game with a back-up QB that's only thrown 17 passes the last couple of years. The evidence is all there for all the Garrett homers to see where the real problem is on offense.

That was a risky pass in that situation. You have four downs to move the ball and he forced into tight coverage right off the bat. Not good, but nothing we haven't seen before.
wasnt risky at all Austin was open, it was a bad inaccurate pass but the decition was the right one

I know the OP's orginal comments were not really serious, but I'd have a hard time blaming Orton.

For him, that was a pretty good game.
He kept the chains moving and other than missing 2-3 long balls and throwing a couple of picks, the man played a solid game. At least he was healthy and had a rested arm. I think even before the final back issues, Romo was hrting much of the second half of this season. Especially toward the end, his long balls were expecially jag-like.

fwiw
Kyle Orton QB rating last night = 85.2
Kyle Orton career QB rating = 79.9

In the end, we once again threw it too much, imo.

LOL in the end he had 3 days to prepare, likely did better than Tony

I saw one media guy blaming Tony.

That was the only positive of Orton throwing that pic, it wasn't Tony... Another painful end to a grueling season.

If you want to see what he can do, just put on some old Chicago and Denver game film. Yeah, the same game film the coaches saw when they replaced him with Tim Tebow. Romo has his flaws but to claim that Orton, a journeyman QB, is more accurate than Romo is comical.

If no one noticed, the D actually played a good game last night and we still lost. And the announcing crew last night mentioned Orton's record when the opposing team scores more than 20 points and it was abysmal (although I don't remember the numbers). Orton is what he is, a career back-up, for a good reason.

Bascially saw Orton at nearly his best yesterday.
More often than not, he is much worse than that.

Once again...decent game for Orton given his track record.
But the defense did play fairly well and that was our lowest scoring output of any home game all season. We average over 30 at home this year and that would have done it with room to spare last night.

If you think Romo is accurate beyond ten yds, re-watch some games.

So says the guy who think a QB with a career QB rating of 70 plus is accurate. Someone needs to watch some games but it's not me.

Remember the TD to Dez against Washington last week? Orton gets his clock cleaned on that play and we don't score. There are about a dozen other plays this season Romo makes with his feet and pocket presence that Orton couldn't do in his dreams.

Orton had a clean pocket all game last night. Show me what he can do when that is breaking down like it has been for most of Romo's career and we can accurately compare the two.

Remember all of the underthrows to Dez in the Green Bay game? If we score on those, we win the game.

Plus, all I had heard was how Romo had to always buy time because the O-Line was so poor. And that the O-Line giving Romo time was all because of Romo. Now we see that it wasn't as Orton had time to throw. And the O-Line didn't have 1 false start or holding penalty and only had 1 penalty on a bogus delay of game.

I think Romo is more talented than Orton. But, he causes the O-Line more trouble than people think and he could save himself and the O-Line a lot of trouble if he had some sort of cadence and didn't always snap the ball to the last nanosecond. I think it's stuff like that is why he's over-valued by the organization. He's just not worth the money we are paying him and giving him an extension was a horrible decision by the organization simply because we didn't need to make it and it was too much money.

Meh, we disagree on the relative talent levels and I still think you (and others) are reading far too much into one game of Orton's. There was a reason he was benched for Tim Tebow and is a 2nd string QB in a QB starved league.

That said, I like Romo but I agree with the you the contract extension was far too much and for too long. I too would like to see us grooming his replacement sooner rather than later.

Undrafted QB means nothing now. He's been in the league since 2003 and he is one of the top paid QB's in the league.

I don't blame the mess *entirely* on Jerry. He did hire Garrett which means that Jerry does deserve a lot of the blame. But the coach has to do the job himself. We could have hired Mike Shanahan and he's created a FAR bigger mess than what the Cowboys have. And he had 2 Super Bowls with Denver.

We talk about accountability, but we seem to just want to put all of the blame on Jerry. The players, even Romo, should be accountable as well.

For me, I am disappointed in how Romo hasn't learned from past problems. As I've said repeatedly, he makes the O-Line look worse than it really does a lot of the time. So much last-second audibling and waiting until the last second makes for confusion on the O-Line and only allows the defense to set up their disguise of blitzes and coverages. The inability to speed up the snaps doesn't throw pass rushers off guard.

Of course, part of that is on Garrett as well. He needs to be the coach that understands that and demands that Romo improve from there. And he also needs to call plays more suited for Romo's abilities. Romo simply is not Brady, Rodgers, Peyton or Brees. You can still win with his talents, but less is more with Romo. And the coaching staff is clueless to figure that out.

I think Orton makes for a great backup because his biggest issue is accuracy. As a backup he can practice and work on throwing mechanics. I thought he read defenses better than Romo has this year and he certainly has more velocity.

As a starter, his accuracy eventually kills him. But, if he is accurate for a stretch of games, he makes for a sound starter. That's why he had success in 2009 and 2010.

Romo is clearly the superior QB, but we just over-value him too much. After watching the O-Line perform and not commit 1 single penalty, it just confirmed what I have thought for a while, Romo's audibling really messes up the ebb and flow of the offense. Orton certainly audibled, but not nearly as much and at the last-second.

If true, it certainly sounds like a very fixable problem with the correct coaching.

However the current management seems to want more Romo audibling, not less.
