"Coach (Tom) Landry had a vision of what he was going to do and had a good core foundation started. At least he was able to convince me that an expansion team wasn’t a bad thing to be with. That’s why I came to Dallas rather than going to play for the Boston Patriots in the AFL, which had drafted me with their first pick."

What year did he say it? And, who was his road and training-camp roomie?

There is only two right answers. Don't get them wrong!

Don Meredith in 1960 was drafted by the Bears in the 3rd round and traded to the Cowboys (who were not allowed to draft players) for draft picks in the future. I am guessing he was also drafted by the Patriots of the AFL.

His road roommate in 1960 would be...Frank Clarke?

I am guessing on part 2.

Meredith and Lilly were both drafted by the AFL's Dallas Texans, not the Boston Patriots.

Mel Renfro wasn't drafted until 1964, and the Oakland Raiders took him in the AFL draft.

Uhh...

I really have no idea, but let me guess Eddie LeBaron.

And I really cannot even make a guess as to who the roommate was.

EDIT: Wait wait, no, I missed the part where it says that "I was drafted by the Boston Patriots".

Considering that LeBaron played for the Commanders before, I doubt that he was drafted by the Patriots in 1960.

Are you sure about this?

While there were two leagues, the Patriots didn't draft anyone in the first round who ended up playing with us:

PATRIOTS FIRST-ROUND SELECTIONS
Year Player College Position
1960 Ron Burton Northwestern RB
1961 Tommy Mason Tulane RB
1962 Gary Collins Maryland WR
1963 Art Graham Boston College WR
1964 Jack Concannon Boston College QB
1965 Jerry Rush Michigan State DE
1966 Karl Singer Purdue T
1967 John Charles Purdue S
1968 Dennis Byrd North Carolina State DE
1969 Ron Sellers Florida State WR

Ah, I found it! It was Lee Roy Jordan who was taken with the Patriots 2nd round pick in 1963. They took Art Graham in the 1st round that year. No clue who his roommate was though.

Lee Roy Jordan was taken by us with the 6th pick of the '63 draft.

Yes..

And, I worded my inital question wrong!

Who 'eventually' became his road and training-camp roomie?

One right answer and you or hendog win...

The first answer was Lee Roy Jordan...

That's an odd thing for Lee Roy Jordan to say, considering that the Patriots didn't draft him in the first round and that the Cowboys and Patriots were expansion teams in the same season (not to mention that the Cowboys had played three seasons before they drafted Jordan).

He probably still referred to them as an expansion team much like the way I still consider the Texans an expansion team. :D

Taken from the book "Roger Staubach - Captain America" by Mike Towle

"Lee Roy Jordan , who would eventually become Staubach's road and training-camp roomie, came to the Cowboys out of Alabama in 1963, finding a young football team on a mission."
