I am not trying to be an alarmist but I think it's reasonable to look at other successful cases. The only two cases I can find on google are David Garrard and Peyton Manning. Garrard is now a backup for the Jets so he must still be able to throw the ball well enough. Peyton's issue was his neck which is different but he had a bulging disk in it as well.

Are there other QB's who have had this procedure?

Aikman and I'll throw Peyton in there with his neck surgeries since it's still the spine.

I didn't remember Aikman having a herniated disc. I know he was beaten up pretty badly (especially his rookie year) but I don't remember the back surgery. What year did that happen? At the end of his career or ealier?

Even though none of us know the exact details of this injury and can only speculate at this point. I dont think this will be one of the more difficult setbacks to return from. Ive been pulled to work on the neuro unit a few times. From what Ive seen from average folks (non NFL stars) who have sent through this procedure is that relief is almost immediate and full recovery doesnt take all that long. However, these guys werent running from and being thrown around by 300lb athletes.

Troy Aikman I believe had back surgery prior to the 1993 season. Not sure what the specifics were.

Aikman had his back surgery for a herniated disc in 1993. The Cowboys medical staff at first didn't diagnosis the problem. Aikman went out on his own to get an MRI and that revealed the injury.

Aikman had his back surgery on June 19th of '93. According to an article at the time, doctors said the rehab process normally took about 12 weeks to complete. He made it back in time for the season opener.

Thanks for all of the information. I for one feel a great deal better after seeing the careers that Aikman and Montana after the surgery. Both were in the middle of their careers and both came back without any drop off in performance.

After reading people's reaction on the board of him being older than 30 and a back issue, I was starting to worry it might be the end of Romo for us. Maybe this is why Jerry isn't as worried as we are. I have to think that the surgery has gotten better over the past 20 years.

It all depends on the specifics of the injury and type of surgery.

It's like comparing how different people fared after car wrecks.
