Hos, how would you rank the top 4-5 WRs in this year's draft (pre-Combine, etc.)?
No particular order...

Desean Jackson, California
Early Doucet, LSU
Malcolm Kelly, Oklahoma
James Hardy, Indiana
Andre Caldwell, Florida

Mario Manningham, Michigan would be right up there with them.

The one thing that's tough about drafting a WR is it's the seems to be one of the hardest positions to translate to the pro's. Even if we draft a WR early in the draft he probably won't have that big of an impact next year.

True, which is why so many covet the likes of Fitzgerald and Williams, but how long do you want to put it off? If we take one this year, maybe we don't see much out of him until 2009. If we wait till next year, 2010...etc. It needs to be addressed. We don't have the luxury of not taking a chance on someone. Soon.

I don't know, to me Doucet looks like just a guy, frankly I don't think they should spend a first round pick on him.

If they could get Roy Williams for a second than that is the move....if not, Bryant Johnson and Eddie Royal would be more than fine with me.

Doucet wouldn't be around with our first pick imo.

I would prefer Roy Williams though with our second rounder.

I like Doucet as well I had a fun time watching him at LSU these last few years, I liked last year him and Bowe.

I like Mario Manningham as well. But Malcolm Kelley is probably the best WR coming out this year. They say DeSean Jackson is just like Ginn only does everything better. Ginn was a stretch for the top 10 last year, but DeSean will probably not escape the top 10 or 15 picks

It does need to be addressed at some point and I believe it happens this offseason be it via FA, trade or the first couple rounds of the draft. I happen to be a proponent of a Roy Williams trade. He's 26yrs old and a proven commodity that has played on a far less talented offense his whole career.

Adding him addresses the age of WR on this squad and allows the Cowboys to see what they have in a very athletic Issiah Stanbach next season and in 2009.

I really can't see Dallas adding more than one WR this offseason. I say this because of the interest in Stanbach that the organization has shown. They speak of his athletic ability in glowing terms, they allowed him to basically redshirt the '07 season, and they speak of his exploits in practice versus the CB's in glowing terms as well. All of that equals Jerry and the staff beliving that they have their young speed WR on the roster and all they may add is a blue chip WR (via trade or in the 1st two rounds of the draft) to be the #2 WR.

If they keep 5 WR's like they normally do, then three spots are already occupied in T.O., Crayton and Stanbach. One of the other spots will be most likely saved for a guy who can excel on special teams in coverage and possibly in the return game. That leads me to think Austin will be that player. That leaves one spot open for a FA, a player Dallas trades for, an early round draft pick or Sam Hurd.

I think Hurd and Glenn won't be back next season.

Even with Austins return abilities I think if it comes down to him or Hurd its going to be Austin out. If were assuming that Glenn isnt going tobe back. Then that leaves Owens, Crayton, Stanback, Hurd.

That leaves 2 spots for WR on the roster. I think that we can get either a RB or CB at 22 that also has great return abilities. I dont know how fond of bringing in Roy Williams I am. But I think their is a good possibilty a WR or 2 make it into Dallas. I am all for keeping Hurd and Austin and adding someone if Glenn retires. I like what we saw from them this year and am very excited to see what Stanback brings to the field for us, and what he can do with the return game.

You make a good point about drafting a WR, CB or RB that can help in the return game. That would make Austin expendable in a case like that. I would love for Dallas to draft Chris Johnson in round 2. He has return ability.

We'll see how it works out. I think Jerry will do anything and everything possible to upgrade his roster and get another ring. This offseason will be a good one.

the idea is to get him in here and start the development process, as it usually takes 3 years for some to blossom, although the 2nd year is a good year for some too

Doucet's a guy who could step in right away, sort of like his teammate last year, Dwayne Bowe, LSU plays a pro-style offense, and their WRs are usually prepared to step in right away, sans that guy San Diego drafted and of course Skylar Green, but he was raw by even LSU's standards

In the draft or FA? There are so many options for our team right now as to who we may sign or may draft.

What would be better? Trading for a proven guy or picking up a guy in the draft?
Where do y'all see this team in 3 years with no Glenn, Flozell, Ellis and possibly TO? What kinda moves would you personally make to bolster our WR opposite Crayton?

IMO the best move would be Anthony Henry and a middle round pick for Roy Williams, then sign a Drayton Florence and 1st round pick round out the top 3 CB's behind Newman.
4 words: Johnnie Lee Higgins Jr. (Oakland)

Don't count out Austin yet. He was open a LOT this year. The ball just didn't come his way - I'm assuming because of trust issues. But if he continues to improve his hands, he would be way too valuable to let go. Austin is fast and can stretch the field. Him (with better hands), Stanback, and TO: Wow that is a lot of speed on the field! Add another free agent receiver or draft pick and our corp is filled.:starspin

there is this fella about 200 miles east of San Antonio....at this little ole commuter college....his name is Donnie Avery. I hear this kid can run like the wind.....and has hands as reliable as taxes....

Seems like someone we should take a strong look at.

I guarantee you nobody outside of the War Room will know Dallas' intentions of the draft. There will be so much disinformation coming out that the reporters will have a field day trying to figure out what is going on.
