I am the first guy to agree with the notion that 'a win is a win'... however anymore wins like this Sundays win against the lowly Chiefs and I am liable to change my opinion on that mantra! Yes the Chiefs were a desperate team, a winless team, a better than their record, dangerous team. There is still no excuse for the cowboys to scrape out a victory by the skin of their teeth against this team.
After watching another struggling performance by the inconsistent Cowboys I had to ask myself... 'who is this team'? What is there identity? What kind of a team is this? What are they doing well right now? I don't even think THEY can answer that question and that's what bothers me. After the first 2 games we think hey this is going to be a good run team... the run will set up the pass and they will have a balanced attack. That is thrown out the window after a couple of injuries to our starting running backs. After one game that Romo throws a couple if INT's everyone is calling for less control from the QB, more running and make Romo be Trent Dilfer. But after 2 games of the safe Romo everyone wants the old Brett Farve back in him. It seems like the coaches are not sure what they want to do and are having a tough time adjusting to the healthy personnel. One game it is attack, attack the next game it is dink and dunk. There is no identity for this offense! Now granted, Felix Jones is a huge part of this offense. His injury is huge. It may be when he comes back after the bye and the cowboys gain that explosive threat, all that I am talking about we can throw out the window. But after watching the game this Sunday probably the most maddening aspect of this 09 team is that they cannot punch the ball in when they get to the redzone, they are finding ways to kill drives with stupid penalties and costly turnovers. They look sloppy at times and I cant help but have that feeling every week... how are they going to find a way to lose this one!
The other issue is the defense. This is the one unit that has looked good almost every week except when they need to put their foot on the necks of the other team and win a game. I do not understand what is going on with this defense. They will stop teams all day right up until they really need to stop a team and then they will allow them to march down the field and win or tie the game. I think it is a mentality. What other explanation could there be. It is this prevent mentality, this bend but not break mentality... there is no attacking in the two minute defense... they try to sit back and absorb the opposing offenses punches and all they end up doing is absorbing knockout blows. Why don't they bring all out blitzes on a 4th and 7 and let the corners play one on one. I guarantee Cassel does not have the time to throw a touchdown pass. Did anyone see the Jets vs Patriots game? That Jets defense went all out on 2 straight two minute offensive plays and stuffed Tom Brady's drive. I just think the defense succeeds because it is aggressive all game and then suddenly they get reactive at the end of games and it has failed them every time... time to try something new Wade.
The only thing we can hang our hats on is an improved special teams! Thank God for DeCamillas! Beuhler is getting touchbacks and the kicking teams have already blocked a couple of FG's. Maybe we should send special teams out there in the redzone!
Well all I can say is I am looking forward to a bye week. I could use a stress free weekend!
