The pit came with the house. I've never used it. I've got an el cheapo grill if I want to BBQ, so I'm just wondering if I need to call the gas company or something.

...but take a walk around and through the house and look for the gas line coming from the home.
You should see a shut off valve (gas ****) somewhere outside or inside your home.
I don't know U.S. standards on the valve, but up here in Canada it's a valve that you can't turn without using a wrench or a tool to prevent vandals from shutting off your gas.
Your local gas company may also put a metal tampering tag on it.
Turn that valve off and go outside and light the BBQ. If it doesn't fire up then you got the right shut off.
Go back to the shut off and find the nearest connector nipple.
See link... (picture of malleable iron nipple.)

Using a pipe wrench break off connection and put one of these back on. (Black iron cap.)

Make sure you use malleable iron. It is low spark if struck by tools. Also known as black iron. When spinning on the cap spread pipe dope http://t0.***NOT-ALLOWED***/images?...://www.plumbingsupply.com/images/pipedope.jpg (grey gooey sealant) on the threads of the nipple. Help seal out gas leaks.
Make sure you break the nipple after the gas **** shut off. If you do it in front you could have some fun.
Or you could call your local gas company or plumbing and heating company to have a gas fitter do the work for you.
