I know it's a long way off, but we need things to talk about so I thought I would throw this question out there. Has anyone thought about who specifically you would like to see us draft with our first round pick next year?

OK, I'm being a big time homer here, but I think Rorique Wright (Texas) could put the finishing touch on a monster 3 man front for us (along with Spears and Fergi). Here's a little bio...

Rodrique Wright
Defensive tackle
6-5 · 305 · Sr.-3L
Houston, Texas (Alief Hastings)
Explosive, quick and athletic fourth-year starter who has rapidly developed into one of the nation’s top tackles … teams with Larry Dibbles to form one of the nation’s top defensive tackle tandems … tabbed second-team All-America by The Sporting News and honorable mention All-America by Pro Football Weekly … a consensus All-Big 12 selection in 2004 … has started 32 games over three seasons … a consensus second-team All-Big 12 pick as a sophomore … has played in 37 career games compiling 181 tackles, 13 sacks, 28 TFLs, 52 pressures, five passes batted down and five forced fumbles … has been at his best against the best, posting 69 stops, five sacks, 12 TFLs, 14 pressures and a forced fumble in 12 career games against Top 25 teams … despite battling an ankle injury for much of 2004, he posted 36 tackles, a sack, three TFLs and seven QB pressures in 11 games … recorded 80 tackles, a team-leading 7.5 sacks (seventh in the Big 12), 12 TFLs, a team-high 30 pressures, three passes batted down and three forced fumbles in 2003 … his 7.5 sacks at the beginning of 2004 were the fourth-most among Big 12 returnees … played in all 13 games and started nine of the final 11 contests as a true freshman in 2002 … posted 65 tackles, 13 TFLs (T-No. 3 on UT’s freshman list), 4.5 sacks (T-No. 4 on UT’s frosh chart) and 15 QB pressures en route to Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year honors … also was tabbed a first-team Freshman All-American by the Football Writer’s Association of America and The Sporting News … a first-team USA Today prep All-American and Parade All-American in 2001.

Most 2006 mocks I've seen have him going somewhere around the middle of the first. I know, I know, we need a big-time receiver. So tell me which one do you like?

I don't care who we draft as long as it's the 32nd pick.

Depends on our QB sito. If Bledsoe falls on his face and neither Henson or Romo look like they can get it done, then QB comes to the fore front. Also, depending on our OL line play, we still may need an OT. Either a quality RT or a stud LT to facilitate a move for Adams. I absolutly agree that a WR is a need. In fact, I don't see how we avoid taking a WR high next year. With Glenn and Johnson getting older, it's almost imparative we get a WR in to start developing as our #1 guy. Lastly, there's always FS. The nice thing is that after next year, I think our club is pretty much there. One more nice draft and we should have talent everywhere. Will be nice to see other teams picking up our cuts rather then us always yapping for other people's scraps.

IF Canty shows any ability at all this year, then the starting DE's for the 3-4 are set for the next 4-5 years w/ Canty (RE) & Spears (LE). What the team is going to need next year and beyond is another stud NT since Ferguson is on the wrong side of 30.

But, if I had to pick one player next year, it would be Ahmad Brooks and have him play either LOLB or ILB. His combination of skill, size, strength, & speed is easily the best of any LB since Lavar Arrington.

Yes, it is way too early for this but it matters if any of our players flat out fall on their faces this year...If FS is a problem then that will be dealt with...If there is injuries at WR then Greg Lee from Pitt is picked (I like him the best out of college WR's) If Fergy slows down then R. Wright will be drafted and if Shanle or James struggle I would love to see either AJ Hawk or Ahmed Brooks in Silver and Blue.

That's not saying a great deal, IMO.

Let's endure this season first before speculating on next year's draft. But my best guess would be a WR.

I like Gabe Watson better than Wright. Wright did not play like a first round pick last year.

Even though it's "way" too early yet for this, I would like to see us go for a WR early in the draft.

DT, WR and ILB will be the focus of next year's draft and free agency.

He did early. Most of last year, Wright was hurt so I do believe that impacted his play. Having said that, we will see what comes this year.

Santonio Holmes.

Holmes, really? Isn't he like a Soph this coming year? The Ohio St. WR right? That guy is very quick from what I've seen of him but he didn't strike me as a #1 WR.

So you really like him that much huh?

My pre-season favorites are Gabe Watson, AJ Hawk, Amahd Brooks, Bobby Carpenter, Chad Greenway, and Abdul Hodge.

Gabe Watson - the most consistantly great NT in college. Good nose tackles are hard to find, which makes me think that we will pull the trigger on Watson, Wright, or someone else who might emerge during the season.

Linebackers - Brooks seems to have marginal coverage instincts, but makes up for it with elite passrushing ability. You won't find more complete linebackers than the guys from OSU and Iowa. The guys from Iowa can cover like safties, and the guys from OSU are absolute beasts against the run.

It would be nice to get a WR, but it is far from essential. I feel like all the guys that I've listed will put our D over the top, but I can't see any WR's having the same kind of impact. You're fooling yourself if you think that any of the WR's coming out next year are head and shoulders above either Key or Glenn.

I think it is you who are fooled here. Key and Glenn are older. It is entirely possible that injury can strike either of these players and we will find ourselves in a somewhat desperate situation.

It would be prudent to view each of these players careers from the perspective of how many games left as opposed to how many season left. All you need to do is look back to October, 1999 to see what ingnoring a situation like this will get you. Cap hell with Rocket and Galloway, wasted drafts, reaching for talent and probabaly another championship.

We still suffer today from ill planning of Aikmans retirement. Until last year, same thing with the poor planning of replacing Emmitt. No, I think it's a mistake to think that we're just fine at WR.

I'm not as familiar with this crop coming out, but the positions we'll draft (assuming our current rookies become starters) include free safety, nose tackle and linebacker (Me thinks Parcells wants to get bigger in the linebacking corp). I don't think Parcells will turn down a big BRICK on the offensive line either.

Receiver is an after thought for Big Bill. And I personally think it's a very overrated position. The Pats have gotten by without taking a receiver in the first round, yet they have serviceable and capable receivers on their roster.
