Who do you want on the nickel for the next 4 weeks?

With Hamilton and Scandrick out, we have 4 weeks without our two best nickel options.

There basically four choices: Moore, Patmon, Heath, or Spillman.

The two safeties would necessitate Wilcox coming up and playing closer to the line and Heath or Spillman heading deep. Moore and Patmon would line up in the slot.

I personally would give Patmon a shot with a relatively short leash and then flip a coin between Heath and Moore after that. As it is to actually happen, I give even odds on the club giving snaps to Moore or Heath.

How would you guys go with this?

Was dreading this thread. I'd start with Moore, and work Patmon in gradually the first week. If he shows, I'd roll with him from week 2 on. I'd probably work Heath in for Wilcox on the big nickel packages with Church at short safety.

Who you got at LB, though? Carter and Durant to start, I'm guessing.

Moore. Simply because he's the most experienced guy we've got there now.

That's what I think, too. Play the guy you think is less likely to make a mistake and give up the game-losing play. Let the rookie prove he can handle the bright lights, first.

Yeah especially early with McClain limited early in the season especially. i was really pleased by the Carter McClain Durant announcement.

This is what I expect to happen. Only way Patmon goes is if you have a HC willing to take risks and Garrett is conservative strategically in general.

We say that, but he opened the season with three rookie OLs a few years ago...

That's true and my one hope for the season is that Garrett truly embraces the walk around HC leadership role and forces some of his coordinators to take chances. Actually manage the offense and defense instead of worrying that he cooridnate the specific, best route combinations, blocking schemes, etc that he has had to juggle up until this year.

I don't count on it but I do hope for it.

With the players who are out I am for putting the best guys out there regardless of position.

I'd move Church up to LB with Durant until Toomer gets a feel for the D. Have Patmon in the slot. Move Wilcox into Church's spot and have Moore at deep safety.

Patmon and Moore for me...none of our safeties are strong in coverage.

Depend on who's actually healthy...but my DL should've been:

LDE: Selvie (if/when healthy) or Crawford if Selvie not ready to go
DT: Melton
DT: Mincey
RDE: Wilber

They could also elect to use Mincey & Selvie as the nickel DE's:

LDE: Selvie
DT: Melton
DT: Crawford
DE: Mincey

They were working Wilber as the nickel rusher at least on occasion & Mincey was working inside some. Lawrence & Spencer could eventually be the nickel DE's, but that wouldn't happen until at least week 9...and that's if Spencer is able to remain on the field to see D. Law return. That would also depend on how quickly Lawrence can acclimate again, which could be tough for the rook missing so much time.

Rest would be the same.....

LB Toomer (Durant or Carter if Toomer not ready...seems probably Durant)
LB Church

CB Claiborne
CB Moore
CB Patmon (Scandrick week 5)
CB Carr
S Wilcox

How would you guys go with this?

1. The replacement for Scandrick at slot CB would be either Moore or Patmon. I think they will start with Moore because of experience. If he has issues, then Patmon will get some snaps.

2. I don't know that Hamilton has proven anything. He barely played in the preseason. I think he had an injury, but whatever the reason, I have yet to see much from him. He is the smallest Safety and ran slow than Wilcox and Heath in pre-draft testing. He did look good in some college game footage that I saw, but I just have not seen much of him in the NFL.

3. I'm not certain if you're referring to bringing in a Safety to play slot CB or moving a Safety up to LB in the Nickel. They did have Heath play the slot CB position in the 1st preseason game primarily due to lack of other options. It's possible that they could use a Safety there against 2 TE sets, but I don't see it against 3 WR sets. I don't see them moving a Safety up to Nickel LB at this point.
