Who goes in 2010--can't add unless you subtract

Pull up last year's depth chart
Then ADD the obvious:

Brandon Williams
Steven Hodge
Robert Brewster
maybe 1-2 practice sqaud guys (Manny Johnson or someone)
6 draft picks
maybe a UDFA or two

that gets us to somewhere between 9-12 guys that will probably be added to our final 53 man roster.

So before we even think about RFAs, what 9-12 guys do we subtract?
Just to get it started I'll pick an obvious one...

1- Suisham is one if we cross our fingers and hope Buehler can be the PK

Who else? There are plenty, but i say don't have us adding players until you can subtract at least 9 players..and probably more. Also, can this be done before the draft like some here want?

Any help?

I hear you, but my point is...you can't even begin to add Atogwe until you subtract 6-8 more guys than you have listed. It's not easy.

I can see Suisham, Holland, Octavian, Johnson, Gordon, maybe Watkins or ball, maybe Siavii...that's 6 or 7 out of 9-12 needed before we even get to adding a vet like Atogwe. Take Hamlin and you still have to find a few more.

I gues we could trade up and lose a few draft picks to remove additions, but that does not sound too great with this strong draft class.

I like how you matched the players by position, becasue that also has to be considered and adds another level of difficulty. It can be done, but it shows one of the many reason why Jerry is not leaping into the Free Agent market.

Call me dumb, but from what I heard about his kicking in practice, I don't know how Buehler could ever be a dependable kicker with accuracy from just one season to the next. I want us to get a good kicker from somewhere else to be safe. I do like Buehler, but I'm a realist. Cut Holland, Proctor, Watkins/Hamlin/Hamlin, Octavian/Carp/whoever there, trade Bennett, Trade Barber, Get a GM of another team drunk and trade R. Williams before he comes back to sober. Hurd needs to show some consistency.

I'm in your camp as far as kicking goes.

I saw you have us losing a net of 4 players, if you mean
1= Holland
2= Proctor
3= either watkins, Hamlin or hamlin
4 = either octavian or Carp

0 = trades
0 = lose Suisham but add new kicker

so we'd have to drop anywhere from 5-8 or so more to get to a 53 man roster. Or if you added all the non trade players that you listed up (so lose Carp and Octavian for example) then we'd only have to cut 2-5 or so more.

I really dont think they will get rid of him. He is great on ST and Romo really likes him and trusts him. Not to mention he did have some big catches last year. He is a solid 4 and a ST ace so I don't think he is gone unless we take a WR in the first round.

I'd have a problem with several of them as a group, but that's a solid list to work with. None of them are untouchable. Given what is available in the FA market and the fact that it's tough for rookies to come right in and contibute (or in some cases start). It would be close to impossible to replace all of them and actually improve the team.

Still, that's a workable list minus 3-4 guys..which meets the demand of the OP.

Proctor, Holland, Preston, Octavien.

add mcquistan, gordon db, patrick watkins, deon anderson, keep octavien he is a pretty good special teams player, but you could cut curtis johnson at start of year after training camp

suisham kicker, he isnt being brought back,
cut ties with hamlin, save money on cap

then add sam hurd to that list, since most likely we will draft a kickoff/punt returner like holiday, or jacoby ford or mccluster

thats gets you to 10 players
1. mcquistan
2. gordon
3. watkins
4. d anderson
5. c johnson
6. suisham
7. hamlin
8. s hurd
9. proctor
10. holland
11. preston

So, with mcquistan, proctor, holland, and preston, i see the cowboys keeping one for backup player, so that leaves you with 10 spots open

Then, you might see a trade with barber, spears and bennett, possibly 2 of those players
that should get you to 12 roster spots open

getting closer I'd say.

Rolling the dice though buy dropping 3 or our 5 OL backups. Can we replace and upgrade all three of those slots? I guess maybe if we draft Iupati or Pouncey, ad Brewster, and then pick up one other guy, we may be ok.

By the way, trades make open roster spots unless it's 2 or 1.

I think you got it except for Hamlin (well, maybe) and Flo.

I do think CuJo stays unless someone we love in the draft falls to us and we can't resist.

This is a pretty accurate list! Flozell was fine the entire season until the Romo kids had to find a scape goat!

They really like Watkins on ST and Carp and Flo are not going anywhere.

Flo being cut is at best media fabricated and not a peep of Carp being cut has been heard.

The premise of the thread makes no sense. You have an 80-man roster in the offseason. You add first, then subtract much later when you've had a chance to compare the new guys to the old guys on the same practice field -- and typically, you end up subtracting some of the players you added anyway.
