@toddarcher who has a better chance to return? Hardy-Mclain-Carr-Mo #Cowboysmail

2:38 PM - 27 Nov 2015

@toddarcher: Great question here because you can see the possibilities either way for Greg Hardy, Rolando McClain and Morris Claiborne, but I don't see it with Brandon Carr. A month ago I would have said Hardy would be back. Now, I would go the other way and say he will be a one and done. To me, it's just not been worth all of the other stuff to have him on the team. If he was dominant, then sure. But he's not been that way. McClain has played better the last two games, but there always seems like there is something with McClain. I can see him back but on a one-year deal with incentives once again. Claiborne might want to fresh start somewhere else. He's played well but it's still not been to the level of the sixth pick of the draft. He's played better than he did in his first three seasons. That's good, but is it good enough? Carr is set to make $9.1 million next year. The Cowboys have paid $8 million for him this year. I guess he could be back at $9 million next year, but why? As of this day, I'd say McClain has the best chance to be back and then Claiborne.

Don't want any of them back.
The draft department is doing a good job. Let them fill it in.

Hardy: must remained motivated on the field and focused off the field
McClain: hot and cold player whose usually more cold than hot
Carr: great cover guy for track meets
Claiborne: InjuriesRUs

My money's on Hardy.

I would think McClain and Claiborne have best shots. There are too many holes on this team, especially on defense to just jettison all 4. Not enough draft picks to fill them all and how active will we really be in free agency? Seems the team is trying hard not to do too much in free agency.

Agreed. Right now dumping all these players with no replacements is not ideal. Carr will be gone for sure but the others probably should be back.

I'd go with McClain. When he's healthy he's on his game! His inconsistencies seem to have been due to injury and rust. Find a way to keep him healthy and focused and you got a game changer.

In a perfect world none of em. Carr absolutely has to go though.

Who do you suggest we replace them with?

Edit: Carr is replaceable. He isn't bad, but not worth his money.

Carr should be gone unless he completely re-does his contract which is a long shot.

Claiborne will probably stay because of attrition. He's not a zone corner and he's not good enough (nor our safeties) to be in man consistently.

I think Hardy and McClain are dependent upon how they play and behave throughout the rest of the season. If McClain continues to perform well, I can see him back. If Hardy plays well and Gregory doesn't do much, I can see Hardy back if his off the field behavior is good.

Hardy will be here. We can thank the media for making him cheaper:)

Hardy will be back IF he has no more incidents. He's basically weathered the worst. To continue to beat him up over his domestic issue next year would be overkill. So Hardy simply has to be the model team member, and he'll be back - and with a fair deal. I don' tthink he'll get many offers elsewhere, and I somehow believe he'll reward the Cowboys for sticking with him this season.

Hardy had better already done his own soul search, and be able to walk through the world of crap that he has created. Then, work his arse off in the off season.

Depends on what Gregory shows the rest of this year and if we get someone like Bosa. If we get Bosa then I can see us going with Gregory and Bosa as our DEs for the next 10 years. Lawrence would be a situational pass rusher and spend the next 2 years in Dallas auditioning himself to other teams.

Our draft position will really what we're gonna do. I could see us drafting LB if we get a later pick (5-10) and our top guys are off the board. But I see us getting DE or DB if we get an early pick (1-5, possibly 1-3). It all depends. We do need to start cutting a lot of bait though.

Only really sure building block we have in the secondary is Jones. The question with him is where will his place be? Scandrick is another solid player but he's not young anymore. I could maybe see Mo coming back since he's still pretty young and may have proven himself a bit this year. But if we really are taking a turn in the right direction, we should probably cut ties. Knowing this franchise though, we'll probably bring Carr and Mo back.

Linebackers are interesting. We drafted two mid-round guys (Hitchens, Wilson) the past two years. People were raving about how we've been doing a good job of getting 4th round LBers, but to be honest, neither of those guys have done anything this season. Are we gonna build around those two for the future? We need to start looking beyond Lee. But we also need some talent. Hitchens and Wilson could be decent LBers but not game changers. Maybe we draft a game changer this year.

D-line is also interesting. We have two young DEs in Lawrence and Gregory. Gregory's ceiling is super high and we should probably make him our future. Lawrence was considered a bit of a reach and hasn't been amazing his first two years. If we can land a guy like Bosa to play SDE, Lawrence probably won't get a second contract. Then you have the DTs. 1-tech is a joke, like our safety tandem. T. Crawford and Irving are young guys who have shown some talent. Maybe we could build around them. We sorta already committed a lot to T. Craw so we have to give him a chance whether we like it or not.

Overall, we have some young talent on the D, but the only ones who might amount to superstars are Gregory and Jones, and the jury's still out on them. Other guys (Hitchens, Wilson, T. Craw, Irving, Lawrence) could be above average players but they aren't necessarily guys you build an entire defense around.
