DOHA, Qatar (AP) -- Olympic champion Justin Gatlin broke the 100-meter world record Friday with a time of 9.76 seconds at the Qatar Grand Prix. The American sprinter lowered the mark of 9.77 seconds set by Jamaica's Asafa Powell on June 14.

what 40 yd time would this caculate to? low 4's or is this even in the high 3's??

3.9 - if it's straight math. But alot depends on whether or not he's starting fast, hitting his stride around yard 50 - all that.

I don't think you can just extrapolate the 40 time from the 100. You're only talking tenths of a second to begin with and it takes a few yards to reach full speed. If the guy is a real long strider, he may have a 4.2 or 4.3 forty time but close extremely fast. The only way to know is to time the 40 yard split.

You have to remember 40 METERS is bigger than 40 yards. By nfl coach handclock assume he ran about a 4.0 or so.

Doesn't compare. A guy running the 40 or 100 doesn't run at a constant speed, he has to speed up.

You don't reach top speed untill like 50 or 60 meters. You would need a split time, you can't really take an average.

But then again the timer starts on a gun, not when he starts running so that actually adds to the time.

When Asafa Powell set the previous record of 9.77 seconds, he ran the first 40 yards in 4.25 seconds (running time). To figure out Gatlin's 40-yard time, you'd have to get his reaction time and his splits at 30 meters and 40 meters. I haven't seen those yet, and they might not have even been calculated yet.

There is no simple formula that can be applied as the 40-split would depend on things like reaction time, acceleration and top speed achieved.

The only way to settle it is to measure his time at 40 yards.

Many world-class 100s are broken into splits (reaction time, then every 10 meters). If you have those, you can determine his time at 36.576 meters (40 yards) within less than a hundredth of a second.

top speed is reached at 65 meters for a pro sprinter, so in a 40 yard dash, which is a little over 35 meters you are not even hitting top speed. Deion is said to have been able to be a gold medalist if trained properly so id say hed run about a 4.23 like deion.

By the way, Terence Newman used to run against Justin Gatlin at the NCAA Championships. At the 2002 Indoor Championships, Gatlin ran a 6.57 in the 60-meter prelims, with Newman right behind him in 6.62. In the finals, Gatlin won in 6.59 seconds, and Newman tied for fourth in 6.67. At the 2002 Outdoor Championships, Gatlin ran a 10.15 in the prelims, and Newman ran a 10.26 in another heat (with less wind aid). In the semifinals, Newman pulled up with an injury, and Gatlin went on to finish second in the finals. Gatlin later had his 2002 Outdoor times wiped out because of a doping violation.

Whats the fastest recorded 40 time for an NFL player? Has anyone broken 4.2?

The fastest ever reported was Randal Williams' 4.04. There are no official, verifiable, fully electronic 40-yard dash times for NFL players. Even at the Combine, they use a hand-held start for "electronic" times.

don't believe he was invited to the COmbine and that it was recorded in Dallas

thats what im saying, at the combine there are multiple timers and they take the average and times can be off by as much as .24 seconds while in dallas they probably had a variation of #of timers and what not, how they timed it etc.

Yes, he won one Big XII title in the 60 and two in the 100. He still holds Kansas State's school records in the 60 meters (6.62) and 100 (10.20), and his 6.62 is the fastest ever recorded in the Big XII finals (and most likely the fastest ever recorded by a future NFL player).
