On ESPN right now, BYU vs Navy.

Khyiris Tonga, DT (6'4", 321), BYU #95
https://byucougars.com/athlete/football/121504/Khyiris-Tonga

94 tackles, 5 sacks

Not going to get a lot of stats, he's a physical space taker. He's going to see a ton of work tonight vs Navy's triple option attack.

What the draft analysts are saying

Tonga considered declaring for the 2020 NFL Draft but opted to return to school to improve his draft stock. While he’s a stout and physical run defender, the step Tonga must take to achieve his goal of improving his draft forecast is becoming more impactful as a pass-rusher. In preparation for the coming season, Tony dropped his weight from 350 to around 326 pounds which should make him a more explosive athlete. His revamped diet and body composition should also help him stay on the field more as conditioning issues forced him out of the lineup at times in 2019. Navy, an option offense, won’t be the best opportunity to showcase an improved pass-rushing skill set, but he can continue to prove himself as a run defender while commanding a high volume of snaps.

PROS: Just a humongous human being.....Staunch in the running game when he initially locates his hands and can space-gobble against double teams to free
CONS: Would like to see more active hand usage in terms of block deconstruction in both the run and the pass game. Not quick and lacks the lateral influence to really win in a 2-gapping role

When I watch film of Khyiris Tonga I am impressed. He has power, speed, great footwork and a burst that is out of this world for a man his size. You can tell Tonga played other sports growing up because of his athleticism. He reminds me a lot of Rodney Gunter the former Delaware State defensive tackle. Both are big guys but have a rare athleticism. Tonga is special, keep an eye on him. – Damond Talbot, Owner, NFL Draft Diamonds

Why would the Cowboys want him?
The Cowboys current 1Techs are Dontari Poe and Antwaun Woods. Poe will be 31 next season and the team can save $4M in cap room by releasing him before the 2021 season. Woods will be a free agent after this season.

Currently projected to be a Day 3 guy. BYU's schedule was devastated by the pandemic so he won't be tested much this season by future NFL offensive linemen. Have to hope he gets a Senior Bowl invite to see how he competes against elite talent.

I’d rather keep Poe and have him rework his contract and release Woods if we take Tonga.

"re-working" with 1 year left is not likely. I also doubt they'd want to extend a 31-year old 2-down player.

Hopefully Poe plays well enough this year to make him worth keeping in 2021.

Agreed on Poe. I’ve never been impressed with Woods.

Dude BALLED OUT against Navy's vaunted running game...119 yards rushing for NAVY? UNREAL!!!! I saw 95 in the backfield quite a few times.

If not, you can always find a band aide at the position cheaply.

Thanks for posting the info on Tonga. Hopefully the cowboys consider him in the next draft or the dt from Georgia

King who looked good to you yesterday? I didn’t get to watch too many games at all, just part of ND-Duke. Duke’s DE looks like a good one.
