10 bold predictions for the NFL offseason
By Mike Florio - SportingNews

7. Jerry Jones will make a big splash
With another embarrassing and early exit from the playoffs and a new stadium on the horizon, Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones will feel compelled to make a big splash this offseason. The most popular speculation is he'll trade his two first-round picks and running back Marion Barber (a restricted free agent) to the Miami Dolphins for the No. 1-overall selection in the NFL Draft. Jones then could select Arkansas running back Darren McFadden.
That's not the only power play Jones might make. With wide receiver Randy Moss hitting the open market Feb. 29 -- unless the Patriots use the franchise tag on him -- hauling in the single-season touchdown receptions leader would create a compelling Texas tandem of Terrell Owens and Moss.
There is only one football, though, and that could create a problem. Likewise, Jones would have to give Owens, who is entering the final year of his contract, a big raise to ensure there would be no locker-room rivalry.
Regardless of whether he acquires McFadden, Moss or someone else, count on one thing: Jones will do something big aimed at making his team better.

It's like he's been trolling fan forums and just regurgated the wildest rumors he could find. All he's doing is creating more free press for Miami's #1 pick and Randy Moss. It's just so wierd because everything else he says seems to logical, then he gets to the Cowboys and it's insane.

Doesn't sound like an idiot. Jones has his fingers hovering over his six shooter, possibly waiting to go guns-a-blazing. That big offseason splash is anyone's guess.

Mike Florio is an attorney who runs the web site Pro Football Talk. He has a minimal amount of contacts in the league, mostly just some player agents who know that he'll run with any info they give him. Other than that, he searcehs the web for info and then takes credit for coming up with the scoop himself. He also speculates a lot and then claims it's a bonafide rumor from a "league source."

His biggest gaffe was claiming that Terry Bradshaw was dead in a car accident. He's about right on his own speculations maybe 25% of the time. His coverage of the latest CBA extension meetings one of the biggest jokes ever as he repeatedly kept claiming that an inside source told him they owners and the union had come to a deal when they weren't even close. He also said that he was told by "inside sources" that Rex Ryan was going to get the Commanders head coaching job.

He's a bafoon with zero credibility who was lucky enough to have Mort be a bafoon and start quoting his "rumors."

And I'll always rip into the notion that Jerry has some undeniable mancrush on Arkansas players because he has yet to draft one as ower of the Cowboys.

I think Jerry learned a lot from Parcells.

I just dont see this happening.

If hes going to trade up for D mac, Barber wont be involved.

Moss? No way... Sorry...

Now I could see him giving 8, 9 mill for Asante Samuel but thats about as crazy as he will get.

Maybe trade a 1 for a top flight receiver.

The best part of that is the news about MBIII. Didn't Stephen Jones say just last week that he wasn't going anywhere?

Florio calls it "The Daily RumorMill" . Yes, it's rumor... so what?
I don't understand why people slam on Florio so hard. He calls it a rumor, and posts it as rumor... guess what? some of them will not be true. Some will. Others will be true, but will turn out differently than anticipated. That is, by definition, a rumor.
When he posts facts or details from other news reports, he always provides links to the original story. He shares his opinions and speculates on news items, just like people do on this message board.
His site is entertaining, and a daily read for me - especially during the offseason when real news is scarce.

This really got blown out of proportion... here is the Bradshaw post from PFT that everyone get's bunchy underwear about:

POSTED 3:13 p.m. EST, January 25, 2007
TERRY BRADSHAW DEAD?
We're picking up some unconfirmed reports from diverse sources that Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw died in a car accident on Thursday.
We don't know whether it's true, and if it is true the world would suddenly be a far less enjoyable place. If anyone knows about this, please drop us a line.
And Terry, if you're out there, let us know you're okay.

This was posted in the "Rumor Mill". He says "Unconfirmed"... "Don't know whether it's true"... This is a long way from claiming that Bradshaw is dead, yet everytime somone talks about Florio, someone throws this out to discredit him. Also, he posted an update less than 2 hours later that read as follows:

POSTED 3:20 p.m. EST; UPDATED 4:41 p.m. EST, January 25, 2007
TERRY IS FINE
Whew.
One of our industry sources tells us that the rumors of Terry Bradshaw's demise are not true. He is alive and well and on vacation.
We're not sure how the rumor got started, but it has been running rampant today. Apparently, the FOX public relations department had been inundated with calls regarding Bradhaw's status, even before we posted our first item regarding the rumor.

Cut the guy some slack... He runs a rumor site, and even calls it "rumor". What's the big deal?

If Jerry does something that stupid he needs to be put out to pasture. :D

If he does I hope Stephen will have him committed and then take over the franchise.

Jerry has already said we need another explosive playmaker on offense, so it's certainly not unexpected that Jerry is going to try and add more firepower to the offense.

Anyone that thinks Jerry is going to take a conservative appproach this off-season and basically take what falls to him in the draft hasn't been listening to the man. He thinks we are close to being the dominant team in the league and he knows playmakers and superstars win SBs. I have no doubt he's going to roll the dice and try and add another impact player to this team.

Jerry is also a spinmeister so who knows what will happen.

His brilliant way of saying something then couching it with a "?" or "we are not sure it will happen but it could" is classic lawyerism (I should know as I am one).

You say something, throw out an allegation and say, I'm not saying that is the case but,,,,

If it doesn't turn out, he says, I never said it would. If it does, see I told you

He often reports rumors as fact and is infamous for making stuff up on his own and then calling it a rumor that he heard from a "league source."

When he posts facts or details from other news reports, he always provides links to the original story. He shares his opinions and speculates on news items, just like people do on this message board.

That's not exactly true. He's usually does find a rumor and then give the original link, but there's been plenty of times where he claims he got a scoop from a "league source" or somebody close to the situation when in reality he got it from a newspaper article and just didn't provide the link.

Perfect example was claiming that Rex Ryan was the lead head coaching candidate for the Skins after their season was over and Gibbs retired. In reality he got the news from a few Baltimore and DC media outlets that the Skins were going to interview Ryan and he came up with the idea that he would be the leading candidate for the HC position. Instead the Commanders only wanted Ryan to be the D-Coordinator, which the Ravens wouldn't allow a lateral move anyway....not to mention that Ryan stated he was only leaving Baltimore for a HC position. Typical of Florio.

For a guy that talks a lot about players and people being "turds", he should know because he certainly takes the toilet bowl.

Mike Florio is not an idiot--in my humble opinion, anyway. He's the guy behind ProFootballTalk.com, which--again, in my opinion--is one of the best football sites out there. He's irreverent and sarcastic--but it's always clear that he loves the game and there's thought put into his work.

For my part, I am cautiously optimistic Jerry will resist making some huge splash for all the wrong reasons. And trading those picks, plus Marion Barber, would be the mother of all "wrong moves for the wrong reasons."
