Jerry likes to blame Red 4 having Brad as a backup QB in a Super Bowl run... When Jerry runs the team he is so concernd with the front line players he doesn't have time to worry about capable backups on the roster, QB not withstanding. Outside of the Jimmy/Bill yrs I ask you to name the best Backup QB under Jerry. I would say Chad Hutchinson would get many votes here but my favorite was Hugh Millen with Ryan leaf a close second...

Of the backups that never became starter I would offer Steve Beurlein.

I'd go Beurlein as well. Assuming we are talking guys who were career backups here.

Romo, duh. If not him, RC would be a good answer (the question was after the JJ era).

Hutchinson? Please pass me some of what you are smoking.

we've had some outstanding QBs just in 18+ years I've been a Cowboys fan. Wade Wilson, Jason Garrett, Beurlein, Romo/Bledsoe. You can't seperate the Jimmy Johnson and Bill years. Jerry has the ultimate authority on personel moves. He'll take the credit as well as the blame.

You actually bring up a good point. A lot of the successful backups Jerry has had have been veteran guys at the end or getting near the end of their careers and they have performed pretty well for him.

Beurlein (although not really at the end)
Bernie
Cunningham
Peete

Garrett himself was 10x the QB that Hutchinson ever was.

Bernie Kosar

That guy would have started on a lot of teams that year.

+1 here.

If I remember correctly Kosar came in here, learned the offense in a week, and started that weekend. He had a 92.7 passer rating that year . . . pretty impressive.

LOL...Bollinger looks like he is 5'6" in that pic !! And the football looks like its bigger. Johnson is listed as 6' 5" , but I guess that's the only thing he has going for him.

BTW, I agree Beuerlein was the best as a backup.
