Of the players we drafted today, how many make the team and who goes to accommodate them?

It's very early to say, but right now I'd guess most of the picks will make the roster.

The most difficult battle will be Manuel Johnson at WR (maybe a PS candidate at first), though he may just beat out Stanback and T Wilson. If M Johnson was also a PR/KR, he'd have an easier chance, IMO (but I don't think he is).

Stephen Hodge will probably have to beat out Matt Stewart and B Carpenter I suppose. But that's doable, esp because Hodge is a very good STs player. (I'm asssuming Hodge plays LB.)

I'd say these will be the most difficult battles.

A notch down in terms of difficulty would be J Phillips at TE, but again, I'd probably give the edge to him right now.

i would love to see jason williams compete for the starting job... just because of his athleticism. But i have never seen the guy play so i have no idea what to expect.

Jason Williams - replaces Burnett
Brewster - replaces Berger
Butler - replaces Rogers
Brandon Williams - replaces Octavian
McGee - replaces Bollinger
Buehler - replaces Battle
Smith - replaces Brown
Phillips - replaces Hannah since we didn't resign Curtis
Mickens - replaces Henry
Johnson - replaces TO

Kitna - replaced Johnson
Brooking - replaced Thomas
Stewart - replaces Polk
Sensabaugh - replaces RW38
Igor - replaces Canty

I would not be shocked if all make the team, if not we have to sign some more veterans.

I just went over the roster on the teams website. I counted 59 current players, they still had Tank Johnson and Zack Thomas listed. I counted 24 players who are by no means locks to make the roster. That includes some veterans who are likely to make it but not locks like Ellis, Ball, McQuistan, Proctor, Carpenter, Stanback, and Siavii. That makes 35 players I considered locks to make the team which leaves 18 spots for the rookies, those listed above, and anyone else brought in after today. I think at least 9-10 draftees will make it with the rest going to the PS.

Here is my problem with this draft and the whole idea of drafting to improve special teams. The entire bottom of the roster is going to be made up of these draft picks, I think we can all agree on that. Well, there is another draft next year and the year after that. Yes, we will lose a few vets but for the most part, the guys we draft in the next 3-4 years will be replacing these draft picks at the bottom of the roster. I would have much rather perferred trading up to get 2-3 guys we feel could become long term starters and then fill out the special teams with the other 4-5 picks. As it stands, I think most of these guys will be gone in 3-4 years. We will be lucky if we still have 3 or 4 of these players contributing in some way in 3 years. I think we could have done much better and still improved the special teams.

well steve octavien, justin rodgers and courtney brown probably lost their jobs today.

and if my name were Pat watkins, bobby carpenter or greg ellis I would keep a real estate agent handy.

I'd say that is reasonable.

15 new players next year? That is even more than my original guess of 12-13.

The URFA Ogletree is a better WR than Manny is IMO.

Too early to say. I think one or both CBs have a good chance. Williams will stick. At least another LB will and probably two or three. Brewster definitely. McGee almost certainly. One or two UDFAs.

Again another difficult final cut even more than last year. That's progress.

As long as Ellis and Proctor are gone I'm happy

Well, you'll at least be half happy for almost certain.

Cutting Ellis saves us $4.5 Million in cap room. Which if my math is right would put us around $15.1 under?

You make a good point....but have you considered the following:

The age of our current CBs. No one we drafted would replace these guys from this draft. Nor should we expect them to be replaced. They are good, they are young and Newman and Jenkins were premium picks. You should not expect to replace them in 3-4 years.

The TEs. Same as above

The WRs. Other than Roy, we are ALREADY young there. Nor do we know what they can do. Why invest this much time and NOT find out what they can do...this is the year we find out.

The RBs....untouchable.

The OL and DL...in a weak draft...a draft where we do not have any premuim picks...there was no way to adress this. Plus, other than Flo, who is on their last legs? We brought in Igor and we need to find out about Hatcher. Spears has all the motivation in the world to show up.

Saftey and LBer (both inside and outside) were positions we were thin. And we drafted a boatload of them. You should not EXPECT to replace Ware and Spencer in 3-4 years. So you SHOULD be looking for depth. Inexpensive depth. The Safety position in the NFL is changing....MORE teams should be moving towards a lighter investment in that position....and a HEAVER investment in CBs.....we are doing that.

Just another way to consider it. Tell me if this changes you rmind.

Jerry himself said he could see 25-30% of the roster churned right after that loss to Philly. Some were thinking he was exaggerating, obviously he was not.

Not really. My point was that we took soo many picks at LB and DB and most of them will make up the bottom of the roster. Well, when we pick 6-8 guys next year, who's roster spots will they take? How about the 2011 and 2012 drafts? Those guys will need roster spots too. I know we will lose some vets but we won't lose 18-24 vets in the next 3 years. Many of those spots are going to come from the bottom of the roster which means many of these picks will have to be purged to make room. I don't think you can keep 12 rookies from one draft for many years on a team that is fairly talented and has many of it's players signed to longterm deals. Subsequent draft are going to purge these guys off the roster. Like I said, I think we will be lucky if 3-4 of these guys are still on the roster in 3 years. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't really like the change in philosophy for this years draft and I hope it was a 1 year over reaction to poor special teams play and that some of these guys can develop into good players.

Next year will be about offense-i have no doubt in my mind.look for LT ,another WR if Austin fails to impress and even a Center.I think watkins(with his injury history),Brown, battle are all gone.

I don't think Johnson wins an wr spot and don't think Phillips beats out Hannah. I could see the rest of the group all making the final fifty three.
