Who would your Ideal Backup QB be?

Since Johnson is not going to be around but so much longer and assuming Romo is the goods should we:

1. Continue recylcling old guys?
2. Draft a guy in the mid rounds?
3. Try to get a guy like Chris Simms who is moved down to 3rd on the Tampa Roster?

During the 90's we had Buerlien, Koser, Garrett and Peete. All of which did fine.

Maybe Johnson last another 2-3 years if not playing very much .

Grooming a kid is always preferable to me as a fan. But getiing a coach to trust that kid when your starter goes down is another story.

I don't want Johnson around for another 2-3 years. His arm is dead and we can't afford to give up the season due to an injury to Romo.

I have no problems with drafting young QB's in the lower rounds every other year.

hell I really dont like johnson. I know he has been a starter for a long time but he is not having a good camp and cannot throw the deep ball in an new vertical offense. I just think we should have went after harrington or david carr but jerry didnt want Romo looking over his shoulder.

Let's just hope nothing happens to Romo or this team will be in deep trouble. Teams would surely blitz us like they did Deadslow and reduce us to a running team.

Experience, leadership, big arm, knew the system. Yeah he was a statue but when protected he could still pick teams apart.

Wish we could have worked something out with him.

Danny White. Drafted, developed and eventually took over the starter role and played at a high level.

That is difficult to do, but that is certainly the goal.

The back ups of the 90s did fine, but there was little continuity and the realization that none were being groomed for the long term. Just about each year the question of who was going to be the back up was there and there was no hope for the future once Aikman left.

Right now Dallas is more in the situation of the 90s than they are of the late 70s. Unless they are looking at one of the young guys as the next possible long term back up. You have to start somewhere and one of those guys beginning their career as a 3rd stringer may be just fine.

I don't like Simms as an option.

The system is changing, so he would have something to learn. He was not doing well when he got all the snaps. How well would he do with only 10% of the snaps? He is not built(mentally) to be a back up. Brad Johnson is. Now Brad may be down due to his age, but he is very familiar with the back up role. It takes a special mind set to handle that position.

1. Starter in prime of career
2. Grizzled vet who has seen it all
3. Youngster with potential to eventually start

The team may be in deep trouble if Harrington or Carr were having to start many games. Like most teams, Dallas does not want to rely on their back up for a significant amount of time. Find me a team that it doesn't matter. This list will be short and a few of those teams would not be good with either their starter or backup anyways. Joey Harrington does not have a great arm made for a vertical offense.

Sure if Romo is lost for the season I could see Dallas signing Bledsoe or some other vet to back up Brad Johnson. They won't be expected to come in and be the immediate starter. If they were it would be a mess.

Like a Kelly Holcomb although he is now with the Eagles. Todd Bouman i thought was ok. Kindof like we had with Beuerlein and Garrett.

Until I see Garrett's offense, I can't say exactly 'who', but someone with some prior (winning) game experience who has leadership ability and is competitive with the starter, but doesn't have 'issues', has basically the same skills set at Tony has and can be inserted (if need be) with no major tweaking of the O.

Preferably mid career in age.

With a young QB like Romo I like the backup we currently have in Brad Johnson. Once Romo gets up in age then I would look to get a higher profile young QB to groom behind him.

I prefer a quality veteran as well as a young project player (I would always keep 3 QBs on the roster) but to me Johnson is no longer a quality veteran. I would rather have kept Bledsoe personally.

I wouldn't mind a guy like Simms.
