I just used Priceline to get a hotel room in NYC for last week. Can't say I got a ridiculously good price, because there really aren't any of those for good NYC hotels, but it was fairly easy and a bit of a discount off what I'd have paid otherwise. Just make sure you're really familiar with the specific area you want to stay in, and if you're going to start with a really low bid, leave yourself some time to re-bid if you don't get it.

I got a good deal on an airline ticket couple of years ago. Flew to Minnesota for a wedding from CA. It cost round trip about $150 which is what I asked. Only problem is you can not pick the time you want to fly only the day. I got lucky on the time though. Hope this helps.

They can have some good rates, but I wouldn't say that I found them to be any better than Orbitz, Yahoo Travel or travelocity. Sometimes they have the best price and sometimes these other folks do. You should shop around all of them before settling.

Yeah the timimg is the issue with me. Need to get situated and don't want to wait it out just to save a few bucks.

This is what I was worried about...I have to nail down a precise time on everything.

you have to do the "name your own price" thing to get a good deal -- otherwise it is the same as everywhere.

Me, I've found that for hotels if you wait until the last minute (i.e., the day of the trip) you nail the best rates. But you have to be reasonable - I don't think most places will take you for less than 75 a night. Me, I think of it as a chance to stay somewhere really nice for the price of a mediocre/bad place and usually bid 100 a night - have landed many 4 star hotels that way

sometimes that is the case b/c you are getting the last room - however, if you don't like the room, you can simply ask at the desk for another -- most people working at hotels have a ton of power to make you happy, so if you are nice to them, it usually works out very well.
