Who's your favorite Cowboys Coach?

I met and was able to talk at length with three of them. Spent about 3 hours with Wade...1 hour at a clinic and talking football with Garrett...Wade invited me and my staff to go to a downtown bar. He, Mack Brown, Nick Saban, Tommy Tuberville and I spent 2 hours having drinks and shooting the schot. One of the highlights of my career. The other was Barry Switzer. Wade and Barry were really personable guys. Barry was great at psychology....Wade just talked defense and never spoke of himself as the HC and Garrett was a piece of crap...Wade staff all went with him and played pool with my guys, the only one that stayed in the hotel was Garrett....and he sucks!!!
That said, my favorite was Tom Landry. He was born and raised 30 miles from my home and i'm 5-0 in the stadium named after him. Of course, Jimmy was probably the best of all of them, until the salary cap....but, he and Landry set the bar very high.

It's close, but Landry. Why? Easy. While I like Johnson almost as much, he admitted to engineering his own firing and departure. He was done here. He wanted to be in Florida. He did turn the franchise around though. But how many more SB's would we have had if he hadn't wanted to leave? Look at his record with both college and pro teams. He never stayed more than 5 years anywhere.

Now did Jerry do things to push him out? Sure, but look at Johnson's record. Never more than 5 years. That's telling.

So while Johnson got us more SB's, Landy is my choice until he obviously couldn't do the job anymore.

1. Chan Gailey
2. Bill Parcells
3. Jimmy Johnson
4. Mike McCarthy
5. Wade Phillips
6. Jason Garrett
7. Barry Switzer
8. Brian Schottenheimer
9. Dave Campo
10. Tom Landry

Tom Landry and Jimmy Johnson are givens by far... But in "today's" times, I liked Mike McCarthy. People may disagree with me and I respect that. As I am writing this reply (other than looking at stats) I honestly don't remember much about Bill Parcells. I remember Tom Landry's no nonsense approach, I remember Jimmy Johnson's toughness. I don't remember much about Barry Switzer or Dave Campo. I loved Wade Phillips' philosophy as a Defensive Coordinator but he was a lousy Head Coach who let everyone walk all over him... Jason Garrett was a joke from year one.

Again, these are all my opinions. You may have a different opinion and I respect that.

Which brings me to McCarthy. You can't argue about those 3 12-5 seasons... I just wish he had that extra "umph" to get us further than he did.

From a pure x's and o's perspective it was Landry.

As far as psychological approach to players it's a tie between Johnson and parcels.

As much as I liked Tom Landry, and grew up with that and all the glory and the SB's. The latter part of the 80's, I was thinking it was time for a change.
I remember the SB's from the 90's more than the 70's. Probably because I have them recorded, as to the 70's, only from memory for years. To rewatch them was not until you tube had them to play.

So with that, I say Jimmy Johnson. And watching how he rebuilt the team so quickly.

This could get interesting one of the clear easy choices would be Landry or Jimmy Johnson, if it were one of those two, why?

If it's someone else why???

My favorite coach would be- Bill Parcells!!! Tough minded, didn't put up with a lot of nonsense, spoke his mind, loved his press conferences!!

Your turn!
Parcells is my favorite press conference coach. That's where it ends.

I can't answer your question. I'm not picking between Johnson and Landry. Similar to Dorsett or Smith, Aikman or Staubach. Not going to happen. You might as well ask me which of my sons I like better.

Barry Layne Switzer.........thread over
Because he was a genius. Got off his couch and smart enough not to change a thing on a perfect team, why fix something that ain’t broken? Got himself a SB ring and went back to sit on his couch.

But really, Landry for me. He was an offense and defense coach.. you don’t see those around. Genius on BOTH sides of the ball.

Pretty much this. I was born in 70 and was cheering them on mid decade with the joy of the Denver SB win and the loss after to the Steelers in a classic fresh in my head. But for all the hand wringing on how Landry was fired, it was time...by years. Jimmy performed a miracle.

As a side note, I really liked the Chan hire. That, honestly, was one of Jerry's more well calculated moves. The guy was the OC in Pitt and they were tearing it up. He was innovative. He was in a bad situation here but I think do a lot with not much.

There is something about the Landry hat and the person who wore it that is a symbol of Dallas Cowboy lore. I started following the cowboys in the early 70's. That said my favorite era of cowboy football was the 90s and that run and my favorite college football team is the U. the run they had in the 80s and 90s was incredible. The Jimmy Johnson led hurricanes were a pleasure to watch as was the Jimmy Johnson led cowboys. So with that I'm gonna give the edge to Jimmy

No disrespect to Jimmy Johnson but I would say Tom Landry. Guy built an incredible legacy with class. Can't be topped.
