I see a lot of fans with the reaction of "shocked but happy" or "too shocked to give this draft an A."
And my question to you is: Why?
Bobby Carpenter has history with Bill. He's a coach's son. Those are 2 qualities that give Parcells a pylon (if ya know what I mean) faster than any late night Cinemax programs. I was hoping the Boys would trade up for Wimbley, or take the faster Lawson but I wasn't surprised and no one else should be if they've followed all three years of the Cowboys under Parcells. Jerry Jones even spelled it out in the after-draft press conference. Said Carpenter was the best prepared to handle all the duties they would ask, and that's basically what his supporters at the Zone have been saying for weeks. The Cowboys wanted the best short term solution.
The second pick was even more obvious, and I feel like a doofus for not calling it. This team needs a tight end! All we have are practice squad guys and a career back-up behind Witten. Parcells made the famous remark in a press conference a few years back that he loves tight ends and that we'll probably witness him draft one ever year. With Campbell gone, Parcells' love for the position, and the Cowboys playing a 2 TE set, it should have set off bells and whistles. A tightend was gonna go on day one. (Nors, if you're reading this, I apologize for making fun of your mocks that had a TE going in the 1st round, you were right on.) The fact that this guy has history with another Parcells coach (Charlie Weis) makes it all the more obvious.
The third pick is really the only one you can genuinely act surprised over. It's a professional pick. In other words, he's one of those project players from small schools that only the guys who get paid the money to scout year round will know about. Of course no one here has heard of the guy. This pick is where we find out how good Ireland and his new crew truly are. As far as a position of need, it's just more 4-3 confusion. Some Zone members swore up and down that Glover and Dat would remain Cowboys forever. Folks, Ellis is gone after this year. He's the last link to a roster that was ill equipped to handle the 3-4. He'll do the best he can and provide some veteran leadership, but he's gone in a year.
Anyways, just my two cents. Not sure why folks are confounded over the draft. And believe me, I'm usually the first to panic and cry about the sky falling or Bill & Jerry ruining the team.
