Why are we set at punter?

Chris Jones is a journeyman at best and he has looked less than that lately. Why are we not looking at other options? The lack of competition for the punter job is mindboggling.

Dallas has 2 punters in camp and in the mean time out of 10 punts he has put 5 inside the 20. He is a good punter what is the issue?

The issue is that he has not shown any significant leg strength or hang time.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of some of the 2nd punters' punts of late? Jones was pretty consistent and pretty good in previous years - and then I thought he was injured last year no? Some of the pre-season punts, the really poor ones were by another punter. I think Jones had one or two iffy punts, this pre-season in the games, but other than that I never hear his name as a concern, and he's been pretty good at pinning teams within their own 20 yard line....

I seriously doubt the Cowboys are going hunting for a punter. Jones has not done bad at all. His long is 55 yards. Now Benton has not looked good but I see no problem with Jones and I doubt the Cowboys see a problem with him.

because they see him everyday in practice and kniow he is far from a journeyman. he is a pretty good punter. you can't just look at average when you are punting mostly from around mid field. the idea is to pin them inside the 20, not pad your stats by booming. half of his punts are inside the 20 and he only had 22 ret yards last year

According to the stats, in terms of average length of punt Chris Jones is 39th. That is my problem with him. If we are pinned back on the five, the other team is going to be getting a very short field. He does not have the ability to stick it 60 yards when he needs to. His punts inside the twenty are acceptable but not great. I don't see him spinning the ball back from the two like the very good punters can. ST are important and I just think a little competition would be in order. I have nothing against Jones, just want the best for the team.

I believe we cut one Punter after the 2nd pre-season game (might have been the 1st even). Check his stats from the prior 2 seasons, I think Jones has been solid, and probably a low priority as "concerns" go - still relatively young if I'm not mistaken...

Not even going to address the flawed approach that led to your opinion of Chris Jones, but he had a 60 yard punt last season so he obviously has the ability to "stick it 60 yards when he needs to."

I hate you for making this thread and I hate myself for clicking on it.

I agree. It's almost a lock if we punt from anywhere inside our 20, the other team will have decent field position. I have yet to see dude just bomb one.

...or maybe I just miss Mat McBriar
