Why did Jerry choose Schotty over Vrabel and Johnson?

Parcells went 10 - 6 and made the playoffs with Quincy Carter. One of the greatest coaching performances of all time.
100% agree. It's unreal looking back on it with that clown of a QB. He gave up after Romo bobbled the snap. I wonder what might have been had he not. I think he could've molded Romo better and taken the team to the next level. Kind of sad if you think about it. Just my opinion though.

Instead we went all flash and lost to a DRUMROLL........D team w/ a ball control O!!

Even the Pats lost the super bowl when they went to a high flying O.

It was empathy I suspect, as Shotty's father is in the records for most appearances in the Playoffs with no wins. Baby steps for Jerry. Lots of Playoff appearances. The "Wins" will have to wait...

Jerry has always said he prefers "his guys". Schotty was already an employee of the Cowboys.

Because Schotty doesnt have a spine just yet. He's just grateful for the opportunity. Vrabel and Johnson would have been immediately successful and taken the spotlight off Jerry.

That fumbled snap broke his calorie counter.

All humans are calorie counters...and the meter runs whether we like it or not. Being close to his 70s, coaching all day/night even in the offseason - go to work when it's dark, come home when it's dark - as he said, "only to have it come down to that."

Only a maniacal man can make that math work for the calorie counter. How many more calories am I going to spend chasing greatness - at 65?

"It's a young man's sport" - Parcells talking about COACHING FOOTBALL and why he retired. Our GM is 83.

Mediocre GM's make mediocre decisions that lead to mediocre results. Our GM in training and his nepo baby think they can become football guys by association. It hasn't happened yet and it'll never will. We're caught in groundhog day with these people. I could've posted this at any time from 1996 until today.

He left us a SB contender and then Jerry went mediocre with Wade and Garrett. A wasted opportunity. That's when I knew Jerry wasn't concerned with winning.

How about his Special Teams choice?

He didnt deserve anything. Especially with the Cowboys.

He has been an OC for 20 years and only been in the top 10 4 times.

That's 40 percent of the time if you need help with the math.

Ill tell you what doesnt happen anywhere but Dallas. Scoring 40 percent and getting promoted.

Also he was the OC of the worst red zone offense in the NFL the year prior. Which seems to have reared it ugly head again in 2025. Go figure.

You all need to stop with this "deserved" nonsense.

Johnson DESERVED a chance. And look at Chicago. Cohen? Deserved his chance. Schotty deserved to be fired along with McCarthy, in fact the only reason he wasn't is because Jerry wanted to KEEP McCarthy. Otherwise he wouldn't have been in the building for Jerry to interview.

did you just not watch the season - it was the top offense in the NFL

and if you need help with logic MM was calling plays and the main person with the offense

he brought back a power running game his first year - something MM & Garret couldnt figure out

In my opinion, he gave up way before that!! And so many people are quick to blame Romo for that fiasco, however, who is the most repsonsible for putung him in that positon? That would be your HC. Romo had no business being a holder on ST. That falls directly on Parcells. I wish people would stop giving Romo the ultimate blame.

Ben Johnson isn't much different than Shotty. Dude made huge coaching flubs in that GB game. That first half was atrocious. If he didn't already have Caleb Williams, that's a loss. Can you then imagine the blow back? BJ adjusted well in the 2nd half. To his credit. But without a stud QB, that's a GB win. If that was Shotty, you guys would be calling for his head in game. Same with them media. There's a clear bias and double standard when it comes to all things Dallas Cowboys. It's the Jerry Jones effect. It's unfair to the staff.

Last off season, many of us wanted Mike Vrabel or Ben Johnson for head coach. But Jerry gave us Schotty instead.

Less than 1 year later, Vrabel and Johnson are now 2-0 in the playoffs, while Schotty never did anything to earn a head coaching gig in the first place.

Oh what might have been…
Jerry doesn't pay coaches. Ever.

Schotty, given his age and how long he went without a head gig, was probably more likely to take the job under the conditions Jerry set. Vrabel would tell Jerry to shove his ideas up his kiester. Vrabel would not want Jerry picking his coordinators for him.

Johnson was the new, hot shot head coach who would have a lot of suitors. Again, he wouldn't sign on for this job and have Jerry micro-manage him. He would have offers from other places that would give him far more control.

LOL

Key Offensive Ranks (Detroit Lions, 2022-2024)
  • Total Offense: Top-5 each year; 2nd in 2024.
  • Points Per Game (PPG): 1st in 2024 (32.4 PPG); League-high 30.1 PPG over 2023-24.
  • Total Yards Per Game: 1st in 2024 (409.5 YPG).
  • Passing Offense: 2nd in 2023.
  • Yards Per Play: 3rd (6.0).

Schottenheimer has oversaw 4 top offenses in 20 years in the NFL as an OC.

Nice try though.
You needed to specify you were talking about Ben Johnson.

As for Shotty, his offense was right up there with Johnson's in 2023 and only fell off in 2024 because Dak was hurt most of the year. How good would Detroit's offense have been if Goff had missed most of the year? No doubt it would have fallen off too. Additionally, being a good coodinator doesn't automatically make someone a good head coach.

That's the most obvious answer ever.
"Yes, Jerry. Yes, Jerry. Sure thing, Jerry. I'm on it, Jerry. Consider it done, Jerry. OK, Jerry. No problem, Jerry..."

I didn't really blame Romo. He was a first time player and make a mistake. Happens to young players. It's just Parcells didn't have the will to move on from it and get it out of his head and Parcells didn't have the gall to keep going after that.
