Why did Jerry choose Schotty over Vrabel and Johnson?

Vrabel or Ben were never coming here. Vrabel had the chance to coach his former team and of course he would say yes to them. Ben knew he couldn't have the control he needed to be successful here, too many other people in Jerry's ear.

In my opinion, he gave up way before that!! And so many people are quick to blame Romo for that fiasco, however, who is the most repsonsible for putung him in that positon? That would be your HC. Romo had no business being a holder on ST. That falls directly on Parcells. I wish people would stop giving Romo the ultimate blame.
That was not even the issue. During the time out, Seattle pulled out a brand new ball out of the box and send out on the field.

This is why the new rule was put in place the following year. It still blows me away how many Cowboys fans are still unaware that this took place.

The phrase "Romo drop snap brand new ball" refers to the infamous Tony Romo fumble in the 2006 NFC Wild Card game against the Seattle Seahawks, where he botched a hold on a potential game-winning field goal, with the "brand new ball" being a factor because officials used a slick, new ball instead of the Cowboys' preferred kicking ball. The play involved a high snap that went awry, leading to Romo scrambling and being tackled short of the first down, ultimately costing the Cowboys the game.

Last off season, many of us wanted Mike Vrabel or Ben Johnson for head coach. But Jerry gave us Schotty instead.

Less than 1 year later, Vrabel and Johnson are now 2-0 in the playoffs, while Schotty never did anything to earn a head coaching gig in the first place.

Oh what might have been…
The question should be why did Vrabel and Johnson not consider Dallas as a potential landing spot.

did you just not watch the season - it was the top offense in the NFL

and if you need help with logic MM was calling plays and the main person with the offense

he brought back a power running game his first year - something MM & Garret couldnt figure out
Top offense at what? Yards?

It definitely wasnt first at redzone scoring, or discipline. Both issues when he was on the MM staff.

Logic? Garrett was the HC of 2 league leading rushers. So saying he couldnt figure out the power run game shows the extent you will try and go to justify Schotty has a good HC.

You needed to specify you were talking about Ben Johnson.

As for Shotty, his offense was right up there with Johnson's in 2023 and only fell off in 2024 because Dak was hurt most of the year. How good would Detroit's offense have been if Goff had missed most of the year? No doubt it would have fallen off too. Additionally, being a good coodinator doesn't automatically make someone a good head coach.
Yes. Ben Johnson has been an OC for how many years compared to Schotty?

Schotty has 20 years with 4 years in the top ten.

Johnson has 4 years with 4 years in the top ten.

I may not be good at math, but I know who looks better. Not to mention, Johnsons teams score at will in the redzone, and arent the most penalized unit in the NFL.

Is this seriously a debate? Johnson has a good chance of going to an NFCCG in his first year coaching. Schottenheimer couldnt even get to .500.

We were never in the mix bc we still hadn't made a decision on MM. By the time we did, Vrabel and Johnson had jobs. Jerry dragged his feet and we lost out on the better coaches who were available.

Vrabel is big and scary. Not someone Jerry could bully into saying what he wants him to. Johnson wanted no part of Jerry's shtshow.

Plus Dak wanted to make sure he got someone who understood how important his stats are to him.

True, but neither of those coaches would come and worked for Jerry anyways.

After Jimmy, Jerry was done hiring superstar head coaches. The only reason he gave Parcells' a shot is 1) He was old and sort of a has been 2) He was trying to get his new stadium built. As you can see, after Parcells', he went back to hiring trash.

Posts like this make little sense to me. Coaches and player movement is very transactional. There are exceptions, but very few.

The bigger bag wins the day and most every agent will tell you that.

Jerry can hire whoever he wants, but won't spend the money.

So, every interview he does talking about all he wants to do is win, know that is a total lie.

This is very true. Heck, if I were him, I’d hire the best coaches so other teams don’t and sail off into the sunset on my billion-dollar yacht. But no, he wants to leave a legacy where Dallas fans hate him and our enemies just love him to death.

That may be true, but I do think there are some coaches that would have gladly come here if the timing had been right. I think Sean Payton is one of those. Bill Belichick, too. Of course, Payton would have cost us some picks like he did the Broncos. And Belichick just wanted some NFL team to offer him HC job even though he had taken a college job. Both of those coaches, I believe, have a positive view of the Joneses.
yeah but they both get paid alot.
Bill was making 20 mil a year with NE and payton was / is getting 10 mil a year.
that is way more than the cheapo jones boys would pay.

they were #7 in scoring offense

offense wasn't the issue - did you even watch the games?

Barbel was going home.

The best coaches want to buy the groceries. They don't want to be asked to make a gourmet meal, with fast food ingredients.

My opinion, I think he wanted Kellen Moore. Unfortunately, he wasn't prepared for the fact that Kellen Moore didn't want him. So this was a last minute deal.

Was he in charge of the defense come on this is Jerry’s team Shawty did a pretty good job on field management offense

Because Jerry long ago stopped hiring serious HCs based on who gives us the BEST chance to win. He doesn’t even interview them.

Jerry hires HCs based on who makes him feel comfortable. He is uncomfortable with any HC who could possibly outshine him or take away any of his coveted “credit”.

We won’t have a seriously talented HC until he’s gone.
I don’t know why people bother posting about anything else other than, Jerry did this and Jerry did that, we all know that’s the reality. Totally agree with you.
