Why did the defense give up long passes?

I have not re-watched the game and I don't remember everything but the defense gave up a bunch of long passes.

I thought the new defense was to keep everything in front of them and not give up the long play? Was the defense out of position or what happened?

couple of reasons.

will allen was out of position on a few plays.

we are still suspect to the crossing pattern. the CBs are not keeping up and are 5-10 yards deep and the WRs tend to just settle in behind LBs and safties. in the no man zone area and run for long gains.

a saftey with range would help, because they can close that gap and still cover deep. the Cbs need to be a little better in passing their man off from one zone to the other.

couple of times we got caught with our shorts around our ankle and the LBs were totally out of position.

Lots of reasons some mentioned already. Another is that we didn't get consistent pressure on the QB.

Its kinda depressing that we are playing tampa 2 which is designed not to give up big plays but we still have guys wide open in the middle(they were open in the pre season too).

Simple answer is Will Allen.

He was definitely at fault on Cruz's long TD. I understand that the defensive call didn't get in on time and he didn't know what was called, but that doesn't matter to me. In that situation of not knowing what the call is and there being 2 minutes left in the half the default for a safety isn't supposed to be just standing there doing nothing while the receiver runs right by you. That was very poor situational awareness. He should have started back pedaling and getting depth as soon as the ball was snapped if not even before. You can't allow a team to get an easy, quick, big play score there. You have to make them work down the field and eat up clock.

Will Allen was confused 1 play....and out of position next play

The other was what looked like a cover 3, linebackers sucked in, and slant right in front of MO, who made a weak sauce attempt to even play the route as if to say "well I have a deep third so screw that I'm staying outside"...and it went for a big gainer

A lot of the slants were going for big yardage because the linebackers kept biting hard on the play action pass.

In another thread they showed how bascially everyone (all the linebackers plus Barry Church) bit on a Eli play fake that left the middle wide open for along gain.

I think Claiborne whiffed on at least one other one and Allen as well.

I hope they dont bite this game even though they have a much better runner in Charles,i would make them go the length of the field and sustain drives than give up a huge pass play.

the paly action kept sucking up the linebackers, giving the WR too much space to catch and run with the S/CB playing deep

I told you guys Allen is a backup. Be afraid of a playmaker like Wilcox though. I see Eric Reid is starting and looking good as is Swearinger. Rambo hasn't given up any passes either his run d just sucks. Will Allen.........smh

Defense got mixed up on the long TD mainly Allen. Maybe a time out should of been called at that point?? LBer's bit hard on some play fakes from the Giants non existent running game combined with the cushion that Mo was playing left the middle of the field wide open for slants and they took advantage of it.

You know, I want the defense to be successful, but I am to the point now I hope they start Wilcox the next game so this absolute madness stops. Will Allen was not the problem. Not on a single one of the big pass plays. None of you calling for Wilcox have backed up this claim with any sort of evidence, while piles of evidence to the contrary has been laid on your laps.

I believe without a shimmer of doubt, that Will Allen is absolutely the better player for us right now. I guess Kiffin agrees with me too. But what does he know. He only invented this defense...

Does this fall on our linebackers? I am not an expert on a Tampa 2 but I know the premise is to not really blitz so that you have more players covering down field. Which means doesn't the LBS need to be covering the middle of the field? I know LBs can't run stride for stride with WRs but there should be no reason players should be running as free as they were down the middle of the field like they were. Like you said, happened all preseason and the first game. Very frustrating. I think another reason is our DBs are playing so loose and are not physical, another thing you need to do with a Tampa 2. So you have WRs getting easy releases and great position.

The Cruz TD was just a busted coverage. Allen didn't know the play and a timeout should have been called. I can live with those as long as it gets corrected. But the other long pass to I think Nicks, he just ran a simple slant and was so wide open, he ran for about 50-60yds down towards the goal line before we could get him. That is the stuff that bothers me.

I think our LBs were worried about our backups on the DL were always in a hurry to move towards the box to stop the run,I hope they dont do that against the chiefs as Hayden and Selvie can play the run well.

It's fascinating how things get decided on message boards. There's been a ton of talk here this week, with several breakdowns of the coverage and some of the issues we had. The coaches have commented on it, too, during the week's interviews. With all the injuries we had, Selive and Hayden stepped in and, between them, provided a sack, three knockdowns and five hurries against the Giants--that's not counting the contributions from Demarcus Ware (10 pressures and an interception) and Jason Hatcher. And, still, the conclusion is that our line wasn't good enough getting the the QB, and that it was Will Allen's fault because of one play where the defensive call was not relayed in hurry up. Crazy.
