Why do you remain a fan?

No I don't think Americans are different to me, I travel to the USA once a year and always have a lovely time interacting with locals.

It was a question based on it being mentioned regularly by posters that made me wonder if it is a "thing". I wondered if geography played it part (people moving state) even franchises upping sticks to other cities reducing "loyalty" amongst fans.

You've also answered it discussing the Cowboys but my question was country-wide, I.e. could easily be about Patriots fans.

Thanks for coming at me for asking a genuine question!
I wasn't coming at ya. But if you been around here long enough you see plenty of people claiming Cowboys fans are somehow different than other fans or the rest of humanity. "Dumber" is often used. .
Cowboys are the same as any other fan or human. Same as any futbol fan. Some come and go, others will fight ya.

Humans like to go to winners. They also like to kick em while their down. Cowboys fans and haters are no different.

Can I ask you....let's back up a second. What made you ask in the first place? What do you see? Something different?

I was born into this, I witness the 90's superbowl teams on TV and was hook from that point. I'll die rooting for the cowboys!!!!!!!

It has been super frustrating continuing to be a fan of the Cowboys with Jerry’s hard headed failure over these years and his refusal to hire a GM. The CAP has destroyed what it used to mean to be a team as we lose players we come to love on a regular basis but I suppose that is reality for all teams and fans. The Jerry fiasco and failures constantly bring about replacement coaches so what is there to love? The Jones family? The Star? The uniforms? I am not fromTexas so it’s not that.

For me I guess it is nostalgia and never end gullibility to hope for the best. I also like the cheerleaders which is what brought my young self to love the cowboys at the age of 7! Watching Roger Staubach in his prime was also a bonus.

How about you? Why do you hold on to hope and keep supporting the Jones family which is what the Cowboys really are these days.
My first name is Dallas.

Addiction. I think I might try some Naltrexone before games next year, though.....

100% nostalgia, it was a great time being a kid in the 90s and the Cowboys contributed to that. Best time to be a fan is as a kid when sports mattered more and seemed larger than life. Frankly the Cowboys will always be my team and I really despise when people just wake up and flip flop on teams. Never want to be on that side and walk away from all the history here.

With that said for my son if he wants to root for another team I'm perfectly fine with that, just pick anyone but the Eagles lol

I was a fan before the idiot came to town. And even though I believe in my heart under this owner/GM we will never again win in my lifetime. It's still a chance I can be wrong. 30 years. Still hoping.....

They have always been there to help me forget about the world for a few hours. I learned over 30+ years to not take it as serious. Still get invested though don't get me wrong.

Just my opinion. Fandom is marriage. It is a perfect match when you are lucky enough to find the right partner.

Unfortunately in life, marriage does not exist in a bubble. Occasionally, your union is troubled by the interference of others.

Take terrible in-laws, for instance. Your life mate makes your heart sing. Their family can give you eternal heartburn.

For me, the Joneses are this franchise's acid reflux. And their patriarch is, by far, the worst overbearing mother-in-law imaginable. I intended the contradiction if anyone noticed.

As Pepto guzzling as they make me feel, I fell for this franchise long before they moved in. They will never drive a wedge between The Star and me. When I said I do, I meant it. Literally. 'Til death do us part.

After all, my kids promised my tombstone will carry my commitment long after I am worm food. It shall be engraved with my tagline.

Part of the reason I remain is because I have always been a Cowboys fan and always will be. It's just in my blood no matter how awful they are. But honestly part of it these days is for the humor and the laughter that they bring to my life. The stunning level of incompetence and ineptitude that permeates every facet of our organization gives me a good laugh on a pretty regular basis and that's important also because laughter is vital to the soul.

It used to make me angry now I just laugh. So in a weird way the Cowboys are still a source of joy in my life despite the fact that we are basically a national punchline
This is a great way to look at it. I used to be angry when they lost but that ended about 5 years ago. I still watch every game and will be a fan, but hanging on by a thread. I haven’t bought anything Cowboys in years, I don’t wear any hats or gear. No flags go up on the house anymore because I don’t care as much. All my memorabilia is packed up and not on display, anyone want to buy something? lol
I have very very low expectations and it makes it easier when they suck like they did this year. And make no mistake about it, I doubt nothing will change.

it gets easier to ignore this team and find players or teams to pull for especially when you have kids and have to break the habit of force watching games - time is the most precious commodity. I also live 1 mile from the Rams practice facility and my daughter is on Matt Stafford LAFC soccer team.

I want the cowboys to be good, but there is no hope as long as Jones owns the team and can get the sheep to buy PSLs and merch.
Easier to pull away, but NO Ill never have a reason or want to root for another team. I hate every other team and always will.

I've gone from not being able to sleep the night before a game to forgetting at times there is a game the next day. Been a fan since 1987. I listened to games on the radio back in the days when there were blackouts for low attendance at home. I was still excited to see them even when they lost because I had hope they would improve back then. Now every year I go into the season with little to no hope for success.

Acceptance is the first step towards recovery brother.....

I do think there is difference from what I see but it's always difficult to know if that view is accurate.

While football (my football) has become incredibly commercial (especially in England), It still is tribal. It's also old with origins in a "working man's" environment with games played on a Saturday and an escape from work. My team started in 1874 and I'd hate to imagine an average human life back then! Football was the escape and father took son, he took his son and so on.

My guess is the "newness" of the NFL meant that attachment wasn't the same as people had better incomes/lives and less need to "cling on to something" that brought them a little joy.

Now really getting deep, I reckon my football created local loyalty as people couldn't travel so simply had no choice (remember no TV)......the model T car wasn't invented until 50 years after my team were set up and even then, it took until after post WW2 for cars to be normal in the UK. looking at NFL, none of these barriers were in the way when it became a popular sport in the USA and I do think that allowed people to "pick and choose" their team right from the start. That is also why I referenced my 1984 date. NFL was alien and hit UK TV in 1984, as a teenager I started watching, clearly no local team so I went for the Cowboys and simply because I watched the Dallas TV show in the 70's and the famous opening credits helicopter shot!

There's my thoughts, you did ask!

Sorry to you (and others reading my huge post) however, hopefully a bit different from the usual Dak socks/ is great stuff we get on repeat.

I have been a fan for so long I can’t remember what it’s like not being one. I am however in a different mode.

The Dallas cowboys at one point during football season used to drive my emotions too much. I made a choice in 2011 after another debacle against the lions to never let my emotions again be tied to the success of this team.

My fandom is no longer tied to SBs and championship success as much as just enjoying the ups and downs. I still get pissed and overjoyed but it passes as quickly as it comes

I enjoy busting on skelator and his nimrods that are tied to him . I try and be an objective guy with other fans but that’s hard at times because I view the cowboys through a different lense.

I am not a superbowl or bust guy and while I hope for that it’s just not that serious to me. I got 0 sweat equity invested in this team and my football playing days are over.

Which probably explains why I bump heads with some that are still emotionally invested.

I do however feel sorry for the fans that have never enjoyed the ultimate success with this team. At least I got 5 rings and 8 appearances to look back on.

I could go on a long dissertation.

But when I see Roger staubach up in that box watching this horrible team.
I remember how many wonderful exciting times he provided for me in my youth and I figure if he's going to follow this thing to the end.

I will also finish the game with him.
