Why do you remain a fan?

What I hate is when some criticize old time fans because they criticize this team especially Jerry. It isn't going to change so go find another team. Turning a blind eye does not make you a better fan. Some of us remember when the Cowboys were great. We remember having butterflies in our stomach when the team went out there to play the 49ers in those championship games. We remember how it felt when we beat Buffalo in the SB. The teams of this century are nothing like them. Even when we occasionally win a WC game, deep down we know we have no chance at a SB. It is the culture more than anything else that holds us back. Coaches and players come and go and nothing changes. It's always groundhog day.

The uniforms.
The thoughts of watching with Dad & cheering for the silver and blue...
Memories are the only inspirational element of this team

Memories
Yes, and no matter how inconvenient we can never replace those core memories with another team. Its just not right

I was born in TX the same year the Cowboys were. I was a fan of Meridith and "next year's champions," Staubach's duels with the Steelers, and the Triplet's domination in the early nineties. While I'm not a fan of the current iteration, I'll always root for the Cowboys.

Pro football, and college football to a lesser extent are the only two sports I follow anymore. So I am going to watch them. I picked my team when I was 6 years old and haven't ever wavered. I can still remember the glory days of being a Cowboy fan. Never been one to consider switching. Would just quit watching before changing. I can still appreciate great players, even if the team hasn't been great. At some point, things have to turn around....at least I can hope.

After 50 years I no longer am. I’m an observer. Kind of like staring at the accident on the side of the road.

Once Jerry’s gone and if Charlotte takes over then I will reconsider.

I am remaining a fan to see what happens when Dak is finally gone and JJ is dead.
This.

Once I support a team that's it for life. I'm not one to change team.

But there are levels of interest. When the front office pays a run of the mill quarterback like Dak Prescott truly elite money, in his case the most in NFL history, then it's clear the team isn't serious about winning a Superbowl.

So it's a case of enjoying the clown show as light entertainment until they move on from Dak and his contract.

Is there a choice?

No self respecting person changes teams.

I remain and the worse it gets the less attention I pay. Then I just hope for better days.
Yup. Its the unfortunate life we chose. Can't switch teams. i'll abandon the sport before I'll switch teams.

Why do you hold on to hope
Answer: Why wouldn't I? This isn't religion. This is a consumer entertainment choice. It's a given that it's not easy, which is another way of saying it's not boring. It's not terribly important, and so when things aren't going well, I can tune it out and be entertained by something else... and when things are going well, I can engage and enjoy the ride.

Well, but there is a choice. Again again... this isn't religion. It's entertainment.

But/and... you don't change teams over wins and losses.

You might and maybe should change teams at that point that you've concluded the new owner of your team is someone whose character is so sideways that you want no part of anything he touches.

(So, after 50+ years I've had only one NFL team and only one NBA team. And. Turned out my early impressions were more than vindicated when I abandoned Jim Crane's business venture after 40+ years.)

I honestly ask myself that question many, many times.

I've been vested since I was 4 years old so I just keep coming back year after Jones boys year.

I've had a Dallas Cowboys addiction since the days of Bob Hayes and can't seem to shake if off. There are other teams that appeal to me, by way of their winning ways, but that's not enough to cause me to follow them on an every-day basis. I'm hanging on stubbornly and hoping something happens to finally be the temptation that I cannot resist. Until then, I'm hanging on and hoping for my team to at long last, shake off their doldrums and return to greatness. Alas, this has become an endlessly toxic love affair!

May I ask a question as a non-American?

Is this a "thing" in the USA that people change teams as it's so alien to me as a Brit. We get given our team as a baby by way of our Dad and then stick to it 999 times out of 1000 ( Manchester City seem to have "acquired" new fans).

I just read almost weekly "get a new team" from posters here and it baffles me completely.

Is it an American thing that a lot of people do actually change teams?

(Written as a Cowboys fan from when the NFL hit UK TV in about 1984).
No, because those are not real fans and they’re not respected
