Why do you think NFL doesnt use option plays?

I mean especially with the faster qbs.It never seemed to crossover into the NFL.I never understood why.The pitchout itself is usually successful.I would think with the QB able to run or pitch would be a sweet play.

Plays designed to get your QB hit?

I can't imagine why they're unpopular.

LB's are too fast in this league! They would stop the option for a 5 yd loss almost everytime!

We ran it last year. With a rookie Rb. On a critical play.

It didn't work.

Couple of reasons.

#1 you don't want your QB running the option and taking unneccassary hits just to have something else in your offense.

#2 the defenses on the NFL level are light years faster, bigger, stronger, and better than those in college and it makes the option play very, very, very hard to run effectively.

It's a lot harder to out run the NFL's defenses with all that speed teams have on the field.

They do not want to expose the QB to those hits and when defending the option the defense knows the pitch man is fair game and will lower the boom on him.

Some days folks just make it too easy...

Think about the fastest QB in the NFL right now. Vince Young? Now think about him running laterally and whether or not he'd even get to the line of scrimmage before Demarcus Ware took his head off.

Then if he pitches it to the running back there's probably a mean safety who lined himself up to level that guy and give him a concussion. Defenses are just too fast for option plays.

Plus, as was mentioned before, teams like to minimize the free shots they give defenses on their QBs. :laugh1:

Yes they are but they would still be fair game on an option because you are not running full speed as you are setting up to pitch the ball or not. The object of the play is to draw the defender to you and then pitch out as soon as they do in the meantime the pitchman is going to get nailed.

Well Vick isn't in the NFL, and Vince Young would not get to the corner on an option play against the LBs in the NFL. He's fast, but he's not faster than guys who can run almost as fast as him who have an angle.

You want your QB running, unblocked towards DeMarcus Ware, whose assignment on the play would be to hit the QB directly between the numbers and force the pitch?

Me neither.

Occasionally teams do run the option. We ran it a few times with Q. Carter and T. Hambone for some considerable yardage actually. We also ran it a few times with Ernie Mills and Emmitt. It can work at times as a gadget play, but to make this the base offense in the NFL is a different story.

When Barry Switzer was at OU and Jimmy Johnson was out Oklahoma St., Johnson's teams could not compete with the Sooners. Johnson did not have the talent to stop the superior athletes running the option for OU.

Jimmy moved down to Miami and brought in some great athletes and ran a pro-style defense. Once he got comparable if not superior athletes on his Miami defense, he could handle the OU option.

Every NFL team has a Jimmy Johnson Miami Hurricane type defense. Gadget option plays will work every once in a while in the NFL, but they will fail miserably if they were the base offense.

Anyone remember what happened when we ran the option with Quincy Carter and Troy Hambrick?

.....no? Because it didn't work.

We never ran the option for considerable yardage, unless by "considerable" you mean "negative."

There are options plays run every year in the NFL. Its just that its not a high percentage success play, is risky for the QB, and defenses are much faster in the NFL than in college. There are also a couple of wishbone plays run every year by one team or another.

Hell, the Cowboys ran the option a couple times with Quincy Carter.
