Why does the media keep saying we don't have a LB to drop in coverage?

I'll admit, I don't know everything about the Tampa 2 but from what I've seen, Sean Lee is pretty darn good at covering guys as well as getting his hands on the ball. I think Carter may be faster but Lee has great instincts and has a nose for the ball. Doesn't Lee's position require him to drop back in coverage? If so, what's to worry about?

Who is saying that? Lee and Carter are both good in coverage.

I have literally heard no one say this about our pair of linebackers....

They're probably referring to the "Urlacher" type of LB who can quickly drop into deep coverage, between the two safeties. Lee may not have the foot speed to be able to do that. I don't know if Carter has the awareness to do it.

That's not even really a requirement in today's Cover 2 schemes because offenses will just beat them with an athletic TE or slot WR running down the deep middle. LB's can't catch up to them.

They still have MLB's do that occasionally, usually more of a way to provide an over and under coverage with the safety helping over the top. But, Cover 2 coaches have adapted this so you don't need that type of MLB. It's not 1998 anymore.

Lee,Carter and Durant are all good in coverage especially the latter two. I didn't hear anyone say this but if you did I would advise not listening to them anymore because they don't know what they are talking about

Yeah, OP, please post a source that has said this above with your post.

Sorry guys, I really don't remember but it was one of the analysts on ESPN. I want to say Mcnab but he it may not have been. I know he did say our D was in Shambles...

That's a valid point.

Urlacher was so good at it because he was a DB in college and had legit 4.5 speed. Those guys are kind of rare!

Durant is mediocre in coverage. But (if he starts) he will only be on the field about half the time anyway. He certainly won't be in nickel and dime packages.

That's why I said especially the latter two.... And I think Durant is going to start for sure and I know he won't be in there in Nickle package

Who is the nickel and dimer guy who will fill in for Durant? Albright or Sims?

That's your first mistake, listening to McNabb. And when it comes to our linebackers, through and through, there is really nothing we have to worry about. They're the biggest strength of this defense and maybe even of this team. Don't believe me? Flash back to the Keith Brooking, Bradie James days for some side-by-side comparison

The LB does drop deep in some coverages but there are many coverage schemes in Kiffin's defense. That deep drop turns the Cover 2 into a Cover 3 and supposedly removes the intermediate soft spots. There is a lot of material within easy reach on how to beat that D. Outs, seams, 4 verticals, running big packages at smallish fast defenders; it's all been done. Predator and prey are constantly evolving and adapting.

While in 2012 the LB coverage wasn't there, for 2013 Carter, Lee and Durant will be at least decent in coverage. The most recent additions at LB in both Rookies Hamilton and McGee were selected for 4/3 LB coverage schemes. We'll see!

Does it matter even if its true? We're not going to be playing cover 2 much more than we have in the past.

Kiffen doesn't call cover 2 every other play for chrissakes.
