Why has Doug Free not been cut?

The Cowboys have been digging deep on restructures, some that only saved about 1M. They could immediately save 3M by cutting Free and then a total of 7M after June 1st (he can be cut now and designated as a June 1st cut at which time half of his accelerated bonus money can be moved to 2014).

There is a huge list of OTs in Free Agency this year. It seems that many of them would be as good as Free for less than his 7M base salary.

I have a feeling he will be cut after June 1st, but we are still a week away from FA, so we'll see what Jerry&Stephen have planned.. Cutting Connor/Spears would save 4-5 mil right? We don't know their thinking, but Jeremy Parnell could be the starting RT & they don't address that position.

Probably because they don't think the amount they can save on immediately cap space is worth the value he provides if he turns it around next year. They also probably want to wait and see how the draft plays out to see if they're in any position to cut an offensive tackle. You need 3 offensive tackles in the NFL.

Thought I read on this board just a few days ago that he was asked to take a pay cut just like Dan Connor was?

There's still 7 days to make the move.

I thought there was no benefit in cutting Free right now because we don't get to use his cap room until > June 1. So the logic is to hold him through FA and the draft to see how that goes, since there's no benefit to do otherwise.
If you let him go after June 1 (or at least designate him for that) you get the 7 million cap savings at that point.

Easy conclusion. There is not much thought or reasoning needed to figure this out.

Right, if they can get him to cut his 7m salary in half they will save more cap space than cutting him and have a vet swing T in place. They could still draft or sign a FA T and cut him June 1st.

They may have asked him to consider a pay cut, and he's waiting to the last minute to see what the market might look like before agreeing?

Or they wanted to see which OTs become VFAs today, so they can legitimately get a fix on what they might cost as alternatives to Free?

Or, obligatory 'we have a poor front office and I want badly to insert that point into a thread where it's not relevant so I'll do it here, anyway.'

You do not have to be a expert gm to understand Free is done. If he gets cut no one else gonna pick him up.

The Cowboys seem to have a plan in place for what they want to do. Let's just see how it plays out.

Somebody would definitely pick him up. Maybe at a bargain basement price but yes they would. There are far worse guys out there and there are plenty of coaches that probably think they can get his technique and confidence back.

Because it's not in the best interest of the club right now.

Exactly. It screams desperation and gives the upper hand to all Free Agent RTs. When we sign a free agent we can go to Free to restructure or be cut. We can also force restructure and move inside to guard. We cut him now the only move we have is over paying a free agent.
