Why does the #2 valued NFL franchise (by Forbes) have millions of cap space (last year too) and this year yet we're nickle/diming everyone for 3-4 years running (since the gallowaste trade).

Is there ANY possibility we spend our entire cap figure THIS SEASON?

$4m for a kicker like Vinatieri still a bargain given the fact we'd have 3 more wins last season with a real kicker

$1m to "lose negotiating power" with Key... SO WHAT! Let him retire if he wants this summer but lock him up.. this is like squabblig over nickles.

I could fill the page with complaints going back to nickle/diming Delhomme with a silly offer (when we had 3 garbage QBs on roster).

It seems he's gone Philly (invest $$$ and energy in a new stadium while allowing the team to not utilize cap $$$$).

I'd gladly like to be shown i'm singing the wrong tune here.

$4 mil for Adam V is accessive. There are other options. $4 mil could get us two solid OL.

I'm with you on Key ... he was good for one more year. Now we have nothing. Keep Key for 1 more season, groom a replacement WR to step in next year.

Maybe because when Jerry made deals like that we found ourselfs in cap hell for years and he is not going to put this organization through that again. Other teams like Pitt have managed their caps and have avoided over spending on players same with the likes of NE. One thing that FA has proven to me is that many of these high dollar signing do not live up to the expectations and is many cases end up being a down right mistake and a costly one at that.

noone is on crack or getting hurt. ;)

sorry i'm not going to sit here like a homer for 3-4 years running 'cause jerruh won't spend more than XXX amount on XX position while we're stagnation.

the same football genius who traded 2 #1s for Galloway

we were several million under the cap last year that didn't help us whatsoever this year or next. it's not like we have multiple franchise players who need to be restructured or we invested $110mil in QB and are strung up.

aikman's/irvin/jay/erik's injury cap problems were a long, long time ago.

I think Jerry has seen that over the past 10 years or so, the Super Bowl has been determined by the ability of teams to develop players they draft or sign as an undrafted free agent and that signing high profile free agents hasn't worked very well around the league.

Look at La'Roi Glover, a player that I loved as a Cowboy. Essentially, Dallas paid a lot of money to get him and they really only got 3 good years out of him. But, coaching staffs changed, philosophies changed, and La'Roi got older and wasn't worth the cap hit.

I think he's just averse to relying on free agency to build his team around and instead wants to use FA to help fill a hole while he builds the team through the draft.

I still think he needs to sign a kicker and I'd prefer a FS as well to help plug a hole. But in general I think he's going in the right direction. Also remember, they'll have to re-do the contracts of Julius Jones, Witten, Al Johnson, Roy, and Newman pretty soon as well.

A+ drafts are more important than A+ FA's.

If Peterman was a player, we wouldn't have needed to shell out $15 mil for Kosier.

If Rogers was a player, we wouldn't be looking to bring in another high priced FA RT or draft one high in April.

If any of the endless CB's panned out over the years, we wouldn't have shelled out $10 a year for Henry.

If Gurode was NFL material, we wouldn't be $10 mil in the hole for Old Man River.

Drafting is key ... alot more important than FA's.

The sky's not falling, but we need to focus on the draft. That's where the future lies.

so it's smart and wise missing the playoffs 2 of 3 years with a top-10 coach of NFL history.

sorry but the 90s argument doesn't fly either.

Ever here the quote, Better safe then sorry? If we get a rash of injuries or a top name FA comes into the market during the year guess what we have room for a signing.

Only ignorant fans say "Spend all of your cap money". Not only do we need room to sign draft picks, but next season we will have to resign Roy Williams, Newman, and Witten. You always want to save money.

You nailed that one. People need to look at some of the high dollar free agents from that last few seasons. If you think the draft is a crapshoot, look at some of the "busts" from free agency.

For every signing that works like Buress, there are two that don't like Rivera and Smoot.

Dooms behind you 100%.

Although I do think the "Cap hell" expression has changed over the last few years. We were in cap hell in the late 90's earlt 2000's. Back then the cap went up maybe a few million a year...Now a days the caps goes up a considerable amout each year.

I think teams have a much easier time adjusting to the cap now (see Skins) then back in the days when the Boys and 49'ers were struggeling (1990's) due to the ever expanding cap.

Of course at least the Boys and 49'ers got a trophy from their caps woes (By the way Skins fans, that was a shot a you guys...In case you didn't notice).

Because he's smart enough to learn from the teams that have had the most success in the past 5 seasons.

Good or bad Drafting
Type of FAs available

Those are the three main reasons IMO that have turned Jerry from Overspending Jerry to under spending Jerry.

But one also has to remember he spent around $28 million in signing bonuses alone LAST year.

I agree with you overall but he's more in the "I HAVEN'T SCREWED UP" arena than "doing a great job" status.

The steelers have 16 years stability and good drafts.

Cowboys are on 3.

But he's gone from one extreme to the other, neither of which makes sense.

TRADES/THROWS AWAY PICK AFTER PICK 5 years prior to Tuna yet now we need be the Steelers/Pats.

I would much rather see Jerry spend wisely on a few well thought through additions like Kosier and Ayedole than have him pull a Snyder and throw money at every overrated free agent on the market.

And who knows TO may still be on the way anyhow.
