So when he continues getting open and catching passes, you going to admit you were wrong?
Just go to YouTube and watch all of his highlights from the last 2 years.

I'm just not seeing an 11 million dollar franchise tag. JS

Alot of his completions we're just rinky dink wide open screens on first and second down with wide open space to run.

Not too many tes in this league are getting all of those wide open targets.

All I know is when the game was on the Line he wasnt out there catching any gamechanging passes. He was coming up El Passo as Jerry puts it lol (empty handed)

I don't see a clutch top tier te as some are suggesting but he did put up some pretty good stats in this checkdown scheme..

I just don't think that style of play by a te is gonna affect the W/L Column or win any playoff games.

Front office is clueless and in this case it's a good thing because Shultz is average at best. Lol, maybe a real GM told Jerruh that

I think Schultz just exceeded alot of our expectations with his gaudy numbers this year.

Which was a big improvement over the dumpster fire of a Te core we've been watching for the last 7-8+ years that is used to averaging 4 tds a year playing 135% of the snaps (against scrub teams and in our division) lol

I think his skillsets are more on that "Serviceable" or Mediocre Level that a bunch have been preaching for 7-8+ years when the te core was really completely bunk.

I think we need to revamp our offense and quit using so much of that set it and forget it 12/11 personell.

Our offense blows chunks at the Playoff level and against good teams because our tes can't beat anybody consistently. They can just barely block much less score

I'd rather run an exclusive 11 personnel like the Rams or mix it up.

We just don't have 2 talented enough tes to use this inconsistent scheme consistently. Maybe 3-4 games a year max

I know somebody is gonna spout off how great we are passing out of this 12 formation based upon stats

But most of the success is catching the defense off guard on 1st or 2nd down or just a bunch of rinky dink checkdown passes to our tes. Lmao

Trust me. There's no winning formula or logic behind having a mediocre te and a scrub te on any passing downs. Js

If that was the case we wouldn't be substituting a slot wr for our #2 te on 3rd down.

Some of those 3rd downs I'd argue we should use 10 personnell or dual rbs and pull both of our tes out.

Especially in the 4th quarter when we're trying to win the game

Because there hasn't been a gamechanging play by a Dallas Cowboy te in over a decade.

We might have better odds of winning the Lottery. Js

I woulda went 5 Wide w Cooper, Lamb, Gallop, Wilson, and Brown. That would have been virtually unstoppable last year. That's alot of speed to cover

The answer to this OP is the same as to why we haven't spent our CAP ....this draft could well deliver a TE, especially one in mid rounds that needs a year of development.

Schultz on a one year deal is just Stephen's way of keeping Dak happy and team friendly. They will draft a TE replacement this year who will be ready to take over next year.
Next year Dallas will get a fairly nice draft pick for Schultz who hits FA.

Dallas tagged him by guaranteeing him a one-year salary of $10.8 million this year & preventing him from hitting free agency when the new league year begins. Meaning, they want to see how he performs this season before giving him an extension.

....and/or waiting to see how the draft falls.
It sounds as if there's a fairly decent crop of developmental mid-round TE's. If we get our man, then goodbye Schultzy and welcome decent comp.

its about choices you have and how you can fill the spot. you maybe right for him not to be worth 11M, but the top elite TEs are making 15M. three other TEs, about the same as schultz got tagged, so that left nobody on the market. and paaalllleeeeaaase don't say OJ Howard, as he is barely a viable backup TE at this point in his career. so would you have screamed if we paid him 8M? or you would say that's a fair value....so an extra 3M, thus we don't have to go into season with McKeon. can McKeon do what schultz does? there is no tape that says that. we just don't know. and who do we have from the draft? oh, wait draft hasn't happened yet so we don't know....now, we lost cooper, Wilson. losing schultz and that would have been 50% of our pass catching production, dump off or no dump off.

he was 4th/5th among TEs in most statistical categories. I am sure if you go watch tape of some of these others (not Kelce, Andrews, Pitts or Kittle), I am sure you will see something similar as Schultz had better stats than them....

so its what was in the market. where elite market for TEs are today and a plan to make sure we don't have a hole going into next year. that's why he was franchised and haven't heard anything about a long term contract, which means the cowboys are looking, covering the bases. just for an extra 3M if that.....I think this was the smartest move they made this off season.....so lets see who we get in the draft. lets see how McKeon progresses. then we can make better plans for next year.

if they give him an extension. three other TEs got tagged this year and Schultz was best of that bunch.....not much options were available and I wouldn't want to go into the season with McKeon as top option.

I don't think this was about Dak. McKeon is a big unknown. anything anyone says is just a fantasy projection. several other TEs got tagged and Schultz was better than them. we lost cooper/wilson and then losing Schultz would have created another hole to fill and difficult to address in one draft (with WR, OG, OC, DT, LB and Saftey already as needs).

Agree w/ most of that, just don't agree on how bad some think he is. If he can block at just a decent level, he's like top 15. Good little chain mover w/ some nice YAC ability.

And it's so obvious.

Schultz is a decent TE who needs to learn how to block a bit better.

I am not getting at all how so many are underrating Schultz. It's crazy stuff.

Wonder if it's the same people who were overrating JAG Jarwin?

In the end.....I don't like Schultz as a player, but I can see why they tagged him.

It's pretty clear they want to find a long term starter in the upcoming draft, and thats not at all a bad play considering the depth at that position this year.

I just think there's nothing special to Schultz' game.

If he had say, 48 catches instead of 78, would people feel differently in general? Probably. The impressive part is the 78.

At least the 30 difference were dump offs, probably much more.....and I just don't see that as being something any average guy named McKeon couldn't also do.

So....as far as I'm concerned, Dak can have his blankie for one more year since the run game likely won't improve anyway for 2022 with hairy boy still chugging around at TB.

Schultz was Dak's short range security blanket and I'm sure he lobbied to keep him. If Dak doesn't perform this year he may be on the trade block with Zeke and McCarthy. The rebuild/retool in full on.

you are sure because you sound like you are speculating and don't like Dak...... or you have insider information?

it just made sense to keep Schultz, security blanket or not. we lose cooper. we lose wilson. we have no depth at TE. Jarwin was/is injured. only one left is a big unknown called mcKeon who was 3rd on the depth chart. draft hasn't happened. other available TEs got tagged so there wasn't any options....if I was the GM, I would have done the same thing.

if Dak doesn't perform. he is here for probably another year. we can't take the cap hit intil 2023 is done. zeke is probably gone after 2022.
