Why have visits if contract parameters not worked out

Is it just me or has this year been so weird in that we have all these FA's come in, only to leave without being signed? I understand that coaches and management need to meet the player, and have an in-person medical check, but in the past, the player did not leave the building without signing a contract. I realize we are spending less money these days on FA's, but what is the point of the visit if we've told the agent what we're willing to spend beforehand? Just for them to get a free steak and drive up interest of other teams? I guess no news is bad news on Jason Jones and Looney, like it was with Nolan Carroll, Chris Long, Leon Hall, Patrick Robinson, etc...

Well, lad, the visits are just visits, not signing appointments. It is a time for the player to assess the franchise and vice versa. Why would anyone just drop by and sign without visiting others, without checking out the lay of the land?

In the past, we have signed most FAs before they left the building. It was sort of Jerry's calling card, like Roach Motel, "you can check in, but you can't check out"

I guess back in the days they wanted to play for americas team and thought this is the best place to be in pro football. Nowadays they just go to the highest bidder.

It's like a job interview. The offer doesn't come until both sides think it's a good fit. Some times you get multiple job offers that you can pick from.

These guys are coming for second and sometimes third contracts and they are looking for lots of Quan, years,
signing bonus, perks, etc. Their agents know the Cowboys are looking and they are trying to extract every last
dollar. Wouldn't You...

Because we try to beat everyone down and most guys aren't desperate or coming back from injury.

Blimey! All these years I thought it was the Hotel California, infested by those AWFUL Eagles who played country disguised as rock.

I am a true blue die hard Cowboys fan. But at this point and the state of the franchise I simply would not play for the Cowboys unless they threw the bank at me.

This is the way it's always been and always will be. Not sure why there is confusion here.

How about the player may actually want to meet his potential new employer before committing. If you have similar offers from various teams, comfort with the team/staff/location probably is a big factor.

And to your point about contracts. The team and agents are usually in the same ballpark $$$-wise before the player even makes the visit. Otherwise, neither side would waste the time traveling/hosting.

You realize that in years past, when we brought free agents in for a visit, they almost always signed a contract, right?
