Why have visits if contract parameters not worked out

Is it just me or has this year been so weird in that we have all these FA's come in, only to leave without being signed? I understand that coaches and management need to meet the player, and have an in-person medical check, but in the past, the player did not leave the building without signing a contract. I realize we are spending less money these days on FA's, but what is the point of the visit if we've told the agent what we're willing to spend beforehand? Just for them to get a free steak and drive up interest of other teams? I guess no news is bad news on Jason Jones and Looney, like it was with Nolan Carroll, Chris Long, Leon Hall, Patrick Robinson, etc...

I think the answer is obvious. How do you create parameters for a contract when you haven't even worked a guy out to see his status and abilities? Like that old bumper sticker used to say. "Hey, use your noggin!"

I think the better question is why the team would rest on a verbal commitment when they are undoubtedly capable of producing a contract in a short course of time and finalizing the deal.

Part of me thinks it may be that the team feels they have been burned in the past by stomping on the gas pedal.

Free agents do not work out during their visits... So, no, the answer is not obvious

Some do and some like to shop around. That's why they don't sign immediately and yes, it is obvious. Well, at least to some people it is. ;)

Most free agents take multiple visits before they sign with a team.

That means multiple teams per free agent don't get a guy signed when after he visits.

This is typical.

Being cause face to face meets are the best way to negotiate? Is this a trick question?

I think he just worded the question poorly. I think what he is asking is why our closing rate has plummeted as of late. Why aren't we closing guys?

Wow. These were 3 in season workouts of street free agents to see if they are in shape and could immediately contribute during the season. Free agents in the offseason - who actually have a demand for their services - simply do not work out for teams because they don't want to risk getting hurt before signing. You think Olivier Vernon was doing pass rush drills and running 40 yard dashes on consecutive days at the start of free agency for NYG, JAX, OAK, etc. so he could blow out his knee or tear a hammy? Just admit you were wrong and go quietly back under the rock from which you came...

Hmmm... Maybe they want the guys to see the facilities hoping they will take a little less when they get into the building :) but you never know maybe when their asking price comes down a bit they will call the Cowboys looking for a job and will agree on the price. That time it'll be a lot quicker!

perhaps but for many on this board and with their beliefs, it is their only option

I heard that in Canada, on Boxing Day, bachelors can claim a gal by picking them up and carrying them off on their shoulders. I want you to confirm that so I can book a flight. Not for myself, mind you, lad, but for some of these ruffians in Farmers Branch.

Lighten up, Francis!

I think the point is that there is no rule stopping free agents from working out if they choose to. Some will choose to, even though most won't. He wasn't wrong… You, on the other hand, were wrong when you said "it just isn't done".

For anyone who would like to argue that our ability to sign in demand free agents has diminished.... Please explain La'el Collins.

This is sort of my point. Collins visited on a Wednesday night and was signed on the dotted line by Thursday afternoon. Contact parameters obviously had been negotiated and player was ready to sign. Visit was just a formality... Things different this year

I cannot find a single example of an offseason free agent bringing his cleats and shorts to a visit and being put through a workout.

You really need to get better sources.
