How much better would you be feeling right now if after Romo went down we trotted out Teddy Bridgewater or Derek Carr

2016 to me is the perfect time to pick a QB in the first round. Some of the reasons

- We would have him under a rookie deal for 5 year, including the option. If Romo plays 2 more years, a pick gets two years to develope and we get 3 years of the " Russell Wilson Effect" where we are only paying a QB a rookie scale wage. Even if we dont make the playoffs, we wont be nearly high enough for the option to be anywhere close to RG3's

- This is a strong QB draft class with lots of quality tier 2 options for us after Goff, Jones and Hackenberg. Conner Cook, Carson Wentz, Cody Kessler, Gunner Kiel all right now look like viable late first round picks

-As mentioned earlier, we likely improve our back up sitation. Now this is not a given as QB's do have a high bust rate. But if Romo got hurt again next year or the year after it would be nice to have an NFL caliber QB fill in

This is the toughest position to find, hands down. When we had Aikman, we also drafted Walsh. When we had Romo, Hutch and QC, we gave up a 3rd rounder for Henson. There's no guarantee that using a top pick on a QB will work out so we need give the position the attention it deserves and let competition dictate who plays. It's a philosophy. One which this team has been opposed to for some time.

No doubt. QBoF is the single biggest challenge the team faces from here on out. Time to get one onboard. Well, time to get 2-3 on board, really.

It seems looking at who they had interest in this past draft ( Grayson, Petty, Hundley) they are starting to get serious about the position. Due to talent last year was a bad year. I think Petty would have been the 8th or 9th best QB in 2016

Depends on Kellen Moore. Than again, said the same thing about Justin Vaughn a year ago.

Kellen Moore is no awnser. He is a smart QB and great guy to run the scout team, but doesn't have an NFL arm and the trajectory of his deeo passes makes him a huge risk for a Pick 6. Great #3 and film room guy, but not a guy you want in an actual game

I think the more likely route will be them taking a QB in the 2nd round and letting him learn from Romo over the next 2-3 years. There's a lot less pressure to play a 2nd round QB immediately than a 1st rounder. I think you'll see the Cowboys groom Romo's successor kind of like New England and Denver are currently doing.

Could be the case. I dont see them taking a QB in the first if its a reach.

But at the same time there is a tremendous amount of value in that 5th year option for a QB. It gives you more time to develope, play on a cheap deal and maybe most important evaluate wheather they are worth a long term deal. If we sit a QB for two years thats a first round pick, we still have 3 years left playing on a cheap deal before we have to decide to extend him or not. I wonder if Dalton had been taken in the first round and the Bengles controlled the contract for 5 years if he would have been extended

I be looking at Carson Wentz

I second this, i know the level of talent will be in question but guy can read a defense unlike other QBs listed on here that only read half the field or lock on to receivers, He can make all the throws, and is a team leader.

Oh man I wanted us to pick Bridgewater soooo bad and he was there...

Ok who are the top prospects in 2016?

Guys that look like definite or potential first rounders in order of how it appears right now

Jared Goff
Cardale Jones
Christian Hackenberg
Conner Cook
Carson Wentz
Cody Kessler
Gunner Kiel

Goff, Jones ans Hackenberg should all be gone by pick 10. The others are in play. Very early guys will rise and fall through the season and pre draft screenings but its looking like a very strong class

Lot of names with the letter C, weird how that unfolded...

They definitely have to start planning for life after Romo. There is no doubt about that.

I don't know who looks like a real possibility, I haven't got to see much of college this year, but I can say that from what I have seen no one has stood out as a guy that I'd really like to get.

There are some decent QB prospects and the timing with Romo (age & contract) makes sense this year. Obviously, you should never reach for a player in the draft, but you definitely cannot reach for a QB. It will set a franchise back 5 years. If someone falls to us, great. If someone we absolutely love is within a reasonable trade up, also cool. Otherwise, go out and get some defensive players to help replace all of the 2016 free agents and give Romo a legit shot at a title.

P.S. I also think it comes down to us or Houston for RG3 once the Commanders cut him to avoid paying him $16,155,000 next season.

I just don't want a Quincy Carter redux. No Kaepernick/Cam/Vick "athletic" QBs. The bigger a run threat a QB, the less of a passing threat. Romo's level of athleticism is the max you need at the position. Give me a tall cerebral QB who can slide in the pocket and occasionally throw in a spin move.
