There are a lot of people for signing TO and a lot of people against it. And we are definitely on TO overload, but I thought I would offer my two cents on the issue.
I think a lot of people don't like TO because of two major reasons. The first reason is that he disrespected the star and the Cowboys and he celebrates every time he makes a touchdown.
Now, that is all true. And it is all annoying. However, I have a hard time getting too upset with the guy for showboating when all the other great receivers in the NFL are currently doing the same thing. In fact, it is even more difficult to criticize TO for it when we had Irvin, who liked to show off and make a fool of himself when he made catches or scored a touch down.
The star thing was a bit much for me. But we should not have let him own us in the game. He showed us up and pretty much owned the stadium that day. We sucked and he rubbed it in our face. Oh well, we got better. So I don't hold that against him.
The other reason that people seem to dislike him is because they perceive him as a cancer to teams. I don't know if I agree with that.
TO was not getting paid like a top receiver when he was in San Francisco. He deserved to be paid more than what he was getting. So he forced a trade (which is exactly what Walker is trying to do, but I don't see people having a problem with him). He didn't want to be traded, he wanted to be released so he could get his fair market value. That didn't happen. So he ended up being traded to the Eagles and still not making his fair market value.
His first year with the Eagles went very well. He busted his butt and came back from a bad injury to do everything he could to help the team win the Super Bowl. After that, the team was unwilling to pay him like he deserved to be paid. He is one of the best offensive players in the league, but he has never gotten paid like it. I think he deserves the right to try and get that money.
I think if TO comes here and is paid well then he would not have any major problems. No more problems than Keyshawn and Bledsoe had last year.
He didn't like Garcia. Well, big deal. How many of us in here like Garcia? How many gay jokes have been made about the guy? I don't think we can look down on TO for thinking the guy is gay and not wanting to play with him or not thinking he was a great talent. He wasn't. His problems with McNabb, I believe, stemmed from the contract problems. But again, I think TO tried harder to win than McNabb did and I don't think McNabb has the accuracy to get TO the ball down field on a consistent basis. So I don't think it was wrong for him to voice his displeasure with the situation.
My only hope is that if we bring him here then we just go ahead and pay him his fair market value. If we try and get him on the cheap then the same problems will happen here that happened everywhere else. Pay him like he is one of the best receivers in the league and I don't think we will have any problems with the guy. No team has done that yet.
I think if we respect him and pay him well then he will love playing in Dallas. Bledsoe can get him the ball anywhere on the field. Glenn and Witten will provide other serious weapons that TO has never had before. Jones and Barber will be the best RB duo he has played with. Our offense can really work with TO in it.
And no one has ever questioned his work ethic. The guy works hard. I think he could really benefit from being in Dallas, working with Parcells and our offense. We just have to respect him enough to pay him what he is worth, which is one of the best receivers in the league. We can afford to do that, and we should. It will help him and it will help us.
