Why is Marcus Spears still on the roster??

So this is what we're reduced to ? Before last year Spears hadn't made a play the previous 2 years - even HE commented about how new coaching was going to improve his SELF-ADMITTED mediocre performances before Wade came....And yes, last year he improved to average, or a a millimeter above, and made a play or 2...Really great for a first rounder for Dallas I guess (the bar being so low and all)...The only reason he should be here is because he is cheap but the original poster seemed to be voicing frustration about Spears performance and being a first round pick....and people pounce on him and defend Spears ?

You are correct, Spears is nothing more than average. To read what some around type in a lame effort to defend him, you'd think he was a 4 time pro bowler in his short career and a lock for the HOF. LOL.

Mr. Spears has proven to be a bust. He, along with the whining Ellis should be shown the door. Sorry guys, I'm tired of putting lipstick on a pig when it comes to some of our "celebrities".

Checking the stats on NFL.com, I found that Marcus Spears ranked 89th out of 280 defensive tackles listed. Considering that most DTs are in a 4-3 scheme, he did alright. Ratliff ranked 29th.

spears is one of the players who does his job w/o flash. you could argue whether or not he's turned out to be worth a 1st round pick but that's a fools game cause he was and he's here.

now if we're getting value out of him, that's great. many 1st round picks don't even get this far.

get over yourself, dude. you're not upsetting anyone who speaks against you, certainly not us "vets" this ain't our first troll-rodeo cowboy.

you wanna speak your mind openly, we do too. period. sure some agree with you. no opinion is ever alone in this world. but simply having someone agree doesn't make you right. my thinking my way doesn't make me right either. but this is a discussion board and thoughts will go in all directions.

some people can handle that like adults, some can't. so far i see where you fall but appreciate the sentiment of this post at least.

spears may never be an all pro wonderdog. but not every player on the team can do that, right? he is a good player when you put your prejudices down. stats all around have proven that. he can get the job done, he doesn't cause off the field problems, and you don't hear him whine all the time about what's going on.

if we drafted him in the 5th round would you be happy with him? free agent? well neither of those would have happened because at the time he *was* a 1st round talent. while he may not have parlayed into a superstar, he is still a good player for us and i think you need to back up and see the whole picture and not assign values to past rankings as if that's how it must go or it's an epic fail.

Well since he seems to want to slam anyone with a high post count, let me take a crack at it and see...

So you want to get rid of Spears because he is average for a first rounder. Got it. Then we can spend a 2nd or lower round draft pick on a replacement and hope he ends up being average, but if he does wind up being average that's fine and good because he's not a first rounder. But in the end we wind up no better than we were if we kept Spears. Gotcha.

Oh wait lets go get a free agent instead. Ok first he's going to cost as much if not more than Spears. And since you said you're not giving Spears a pass on tackles and I've seen that the others listed have no more than he does we wind up paying more for the same average. Oh wait it's not the tackles, Spears plays out of position too much, blah blah blah. Well unless you have watched the other 3-4 ends you've mentioned play by play like you appear to have watched Spears (which I highly doubt) how do you know they weren't out of position on "X's" touchdown run or "Y's" pass play? You don't do you?

So what's your fall back then? I've seen Spears, they're not Spears, therefore they must be better? As it's been stated several times before, you cannot have a all-pro at every position. Is Spear's an all pro? No. Does he generally do what we need of him? Yes. Is he an adequate role player? Yes. Was he drafted too high? That is debatable, and I agree he was. However, as was also stated before that's in the past and can't be changed. Spending more money for the same average free agent, or rolling the dice and hoping a draft pick develops into something more than average is just plain asinine. Sorry if my post count or opinion don't conform to you arguement
