Spears is decent for a 3-4 end, but the problem is he was drafted in the mid first to be special.

You dont burn a mid 1st on a JAG, and that is what we did.

However, you dont just release him because he does have some value.

Spears and Carpenter have not lived up to their 1st round draft status, but they do have some value so you dont just go and cut them for no reason.

Main reason is we dont have any better to take their place.

It is what it is............the are 1st round JAGs.

Best explanation I've heard to date on this topic. Thanks

This goes to show you that knowing football is not a process of osmosis for some people. Spears is not the problem.

Good point. I thought that the D played well on a lot of occasions this year, but were on the field too many times due to offensive struggles. FWIW, I don't see Spears as the problem either. He was able to stay healthy and was a soldier in the trenches. Would I like to see more from him? Absolutely. Do i see him as a "bust"? No. A bust is a guy who can't get on the field and can't make the roster.

No reason for the insults. I never said Spears was the problem, just that he is a bust in that he is only middling at best, despite burning a first rounder on him. Our problems go well beyond Mr. Spears, starting with our owner/GM.

You may have a better point on that observation. I do believe that pointing to Spears may be a bit of a red herring. The Cowboys have a good D. Some depth on the Dline and some Safety help are in order, but the issues are on the other side of the ball.

I thought Spears had a solid year last season. He's a defensive end in the 3-4. Your not suppose to hear his name. You should be more worried if you don't hear the linebackers name called because that's where you live and die in the 3-4.

Spears was solid last year. You don't cut solid just cuz you spent a 1st rounder on it and you're bitter that you didn't get something better.

Fickleness at its best.

I'm sorry. It is just plain dumb to call a guy who has stuck in the league for 4 years and clearly is going to play in this league for many more years, a bust.
