Why is Price returning punts?

Why is Price returning punts? I just can't agree with that decision at all. He's tried it before with Buffalo and wasn't good at it. I didn't like Crayton in that role either, and I don't think he was very good at it, which was predictable. Ditto Dedric Ward, another Parcells favorite punt returner.

I know Parcells values special teams and the return game, which makes these decisions all the more baffling. He's got a guy playing cornerback that could be explosive in the punt return game, yet he refuses to use him because "he's already getting a lot of work and doesn't want to tax him". We can't remove some of his other duties and just let him play corner and take a couple of punts to the end zone every year? Would Parcells let Deion run back punts?

I also know Parcells is a good teacher of the return game. I saw the "In their Own Words'" deal, and I know he can teach a guy that has no clue how to return punts, and probably make him pretty decent at it. But why?

Newman would have taken a few of those punts that Crayton fielded against the Eagles a long ways.

it's ridiculous to think that Newman who plays like every single defensive down, is going to get much time at PR. Price plays a lot less and is also fast enough to make something happen. It's just obviously not worth it. Newman means way too much to this team, and to have him get a sehorn type injury or whatever and go down would be way too big of a blow to this team, just for punt returns. Why do people always want him to, isnt pass defense more important than punt returns? People act like Newman is the 2nd coming of Dante Hall but it aint happening.

He volunteered to and Parcells feels Newman needs a break.

Trip, I know it might sound bizarre, but Bill has mentioned more than once Tnew lacks the body type he favors in a returner. He thinks Tnew's more gangly, loose jointed frame is more conducive to injury.

He might be totally off the wall with this idea, but he at least is consistent.

Dave Megget, Leon Johnson, Dedric Ward, Joey Galloway, Patrick Crayton, and now Peerless Price are all the same body type - seamlessly muscled and fluid athletes who are both streamlined but more compactly built.

Newman is playing damn well. Seems to me most people who want him to return punts think he's doings squat on defense. Believe me, Newman is a large part of this defense shutting down MOss, Owens and Burres

How do you know, you ever seen him do it? He ran back a few in preseason and looked pretty good. He was excellent at it in college. I doubt Price makes anything happen in that role.

No, I know how valuable he is. But big returns win games. That's valuable too.

Best cornerback ever to play the game was able to do it. Many others have been to.

Remember when Deion was returning a punt in the playoff game against the Panthers -- and he got his collarbone broken?

That's about all I need to know about using a top CB at that spot.

and deion wasnt exactly injury free you know. And lets add in the fact that Deion was Deion, Newman, does waht he is suppose to, He is not the only player on this team that can do something on returns.

I've said it before leave Newman alone on D.... Jason Sehorn wanted to return kicks and he destroyed his knee in preseason doing it and was never the same.

I don't want to risk it....

I believe exactly what you said is the reason. I've heard him say it, too. I just disagree that's all. I think at some point he will get a shot and we'll all see what we've been missing.

So not worth it. What do you plan to do if Newman gets hurt returning punts which is a great possibility? Is losing the best defender on the team, and fastest really worth it? Put price or some other guy back there and let them do what they can. At least it isnt gonna be a huge blow if they get hurt.

You have to earn your BP player designation and PP has a ways to go for his, thats why. BP's message is clear: If PP wants to take over for Crayton he needs to do EVERYTHING Crayton did, return punts, block like a demon and catch everything thrown his way. Not just the late game heroics.

BP is one of those old foxes who you can learn a lot from if one can shut up long enough and just pay attention.

One difference was that since no one ever threw Deion's way, he rarely had to do much on D. Also, he wouldn't tackle so he was getting a below average amount of physical contact to start with.

I don't think injury is a great possibility at all. I think there's a couple of examples of good players that have been hurt returning punts, and a ton of ones on the other side of the coin. It was okay to risk injury and let Newman return a few punts in preseason?
