Why isn't Randy Gregory more productive yet?

In an ultra-premature re-draft, I still think I might still take our first two picks of Jones and Gregory.
But after, in the 3rd and 4th rounds, it would've been nice to land Jeremy Langford and Stephon Diggs play RB and WR for us.

What's going on with him.

He showed a ton of promise, got injured. Understandable that we would ease him back in. But he isn't getting many snaps and I don't understand why?

In the little work I've seen of him, he looks good.

Any word?

I think we tend to not see how much injuries affect players. Although Gregory is back on the field, I don't think he's completely back. Injuries have also been mentioned concerning McClain and T. Crawford, but we don't really know how much they are affecting their play.

What's it going to be then, eh?

High ankle. Ruins basically a year. Yet there is a thread a week wondering why Gregory is not doing what we were told he would.

Diggs will be the next Steve Smith.

Because we overrated him, like every single person on this roster?

So you are saying Romo, Dez, Lee, the 1st rounders on the OL, including a FA that should have been a 1st rounder, Jones, Bailey, Witten are all overrated?
Give us some in depth analytical reason on the roster.
Oh, yeah, the role players all can't be all pros either. Like Beasley, Hitchens just to name a few.

Im not calling him a bust. But to hit right away on 2 of our "big 3" we drafted this year is damn good

Who are the big three we drafted?
We hit on Byron Jones. That's one.
Are you considering Randy Gregory among the three?
And who is the third?

Looked good against some non-gameplanning scrubs in the preseason. Cue the unrealistic optimism.

Fast forward to regular season. Injured, playing against real NFL players who watch film. Hope he gets better next year.

I like the flashes we saw of him early and he will probably get more healthy and we will see them again. However, lets not forget that he has never really been a consistent player. He had lots of great plays and then disappearing at Nebraska.

Who on this defense IS producing? Hardy is the only one that comes close and he's a basketcase.

So overall consensus is that it is the injury?

I thought that at first also, but it has been a while now and I thought by now we'd see him getting more and more run. Especially with Hardy being sort of "blah" the last couple weeks.

I disagree with the few folks that said he is a bust or lacks technique. I think, in the limited snaps I've seen him take recently, he has performed well.
Pass rushing is almost as much about setting up your man as it is about physical ability and I think Gregory is really good about setting his man up with different moves... you can't do that if you're just situationally rushing.

He barely gets any run. When he's getting regular snaps, I think we'll see some more of his effectiveness.

Didn't realize high ankle sprains took so long to recover from. If what is being posted in this thread is accurate, along with what I've researched myself, we can chalk this up to what will be a lost season for Gregory.

Anyone who says his technique is lacking doesn't know the type of player he is. Marinelli was using his use of hands and leverage at training camp as an example for the other ends. His dip and hip flexibility, along with speed and strength are a rare combo. He's undersized right now, but he hasn't had to make much of an impact since there's three DEs infront of him in depth chart.

The TB game was the first game since he's been back that he created a little pressure. The HAS slowed him down for half the season. He'll get stronger and contribute more with time.

The defense, though, hasn't really bee the issue other than in ATL and in the second PHI game other than with their inability to take the ball away. Hopefully that's changing a bit as we're changing things on the back end and if we end up rotating the LBs a bit more.
